The misconception that the Broad St. Bullies fought their way to 2 Stanley Cups is understandable. The Philly Flu was a real phenomenon. The reality is that those teams were highly skilled and they could skate. They could outskill most other clubs. Since 1975 the Flyers have had a few Cup runs. Twice in the 80’s against a ridiculously stacked Edmonton club, the run in ’97 against a buzzsaw in Detroit and the 2010 squad that never happens unless we win a shootout in game 82 of the regular season.
With Mr. Snider at the helm we could count on every resource being exhausted to win. Plenty of mistakes were made but the effort was genuine. There’s what ifs like 1990 - Jaromir Jagr instead of Mike Ricci. 2005 - James Neal instead of Steve Downie. The draft lottery of 2007 - Patrick Kane instead of JVR. 2013 - Sam Morin after a long and pointless winning streak with the team already eliminated from playoff contention - had they remained in the same draft position we were looking at Seth Jones. Even so, players taken after Morin were the likes of Pulock, Mantha, Burakovsky and Domi.
The Andrew MacDonald contract was disgraceful but you probably didn’t know that the 2 picks we traded to get him turned out to be Ilya Sorokin and Brandon Carlo. As if you didn’t feel bad enough.
We got rid of Justin Williams and Patrick Sharp - even Brayden Schenn - all move on to win Cups as did Richards and Carter [ CLB traded Carter to LA for Jack Johnson ]. Trading Bob, signing Bryz. Haven’t we had enough? I have.
This team needs a rebuild. You can’t win the Cup without elite talent. You must have 2 elite centers, an elite winger or 2 and a true #1 defenseman. Good goaltending certainly helps. I love all of our players - they all play hard. They're just a bad team. How bad? They rank 27th in the league using combined advanced statistics. The stats don't lie. I’m not a huge Corsi and Fenwick guy but you've seen enough games.
Dave Scott is not a hockey guy. He cares about selling seats. Star Wars night? Give me a break. He wont listen until the seats are empty.
I’m a Flyers fan for life. Its a big part of my life. I moved here 25 years ago to be near the team
[ ridiculous but true ]. I canceled my season tickets. Enough with the Band Aids. We deserve better.
