Detroit did a write up on Nate Danielson that touched on something a few of us have talked about in the comments. The young center managed to get some attention in his post draft season. Highlight reels started being posted and the question was posted, “can this be another 19 year old who could take a roster spot?” To be frank, it’s a tough road ahead.
On the plus side, Dan Cleary mentioned that Danielson grabbed the top spot in fitness testing at rookie camp after the draft this year.
Unfortunately, Nate’s tenure in Grand Rapids during the playoffs was a bit uneventful. The challenge for the right shot centerman is to grab a top 6 spot in Detroit that would likely see Compher either move to the wing or move down. Either way, Yzerman’s attitude toward Danielson along with Kasper and Mazur is, “if they can grab a spot, we’ll make room for them”.
Take a look at Puck Pedia and you get a sense of who may be on the waiver wire if a prospect overperforms. You can argue regarding moving a player down vs. moving them westward. Either way, it’s a problem I’d love to see on defense as opposed to the forwards but we take what lies before us. Buium or Sandin-Pellikka don’t seem poised for that opportunity but will certainly garner attention in this next development year.
The debate is time on ice and reps. If Mazur grabbed a 3rd or 4th line role, there wouldn’t be as much concern. Kasper and Danielson need reps and higher minutes for their “projected” roles.
It’s a higher standard and a tougher spot to grab.
So, as you look at the upcoming prospects tournament, training camp and pre season, do you see any opening for Danielson to grab a spot and shake up the roster? As always, let me know in the comments, and thanks for stopping by!
