A long quiet summer for DRW fans as eras shift again

A write up on Pittsburgh caught my attention. Of course I went “fan mode” and got out the calculator, puck pedia, the roster and started to chew. Reality hits, Seider and Raymond still aren’t signed (neither is Berggren) and a defenseman that has what Detroit needs isn’t available after an hour wasted on “what ifs”.

I fully accept that the summer is supposed to have quiet stretches. The last big interaction from many of you happened around the draft and free agency. Essentially, at best there seems to be lethargy amongst the commenting faithful. For the Red Wings, news of season ticket sales were a welcome surprise but it is otherwise very quiet. I don’t know what this team will look like when it hits the ice. The power play feels like it took a hit with Perron and Ghost headed out. The addition of Tarasenko to the top 6 adds better 2 way play. I don’t know what Eddy will look like after a full camp/preseason where he is slated to be with Detroit. I want to see the team play. I wish Sandin Pellikka would give more consideration to GR, but that’s doesn’t seem to be in his plans.

As far as “the era”, it feels like we’re watching Crosby, Malkin and Ovi start to make the mental transition. Yes both franchises want to be competitive but the goal scoring for #8 and a plotted path for #87 seem to signal the passing of the torch. Matthews and McDavid will hold the reins in terms of people who don’t really follow the sport having a player they can pick out. We’re seeing a level of speed and execution that is baffling and exciting.

Going back to clips of the “dead puck era”, a New Jersey team that could frustrate in those heavy hitting low scoring contests to the “Shanahan Summit” where we saw changes implemented to try and reopen the league and bring a new set of fans. Cap era, emerging new managerial philosophies with advanced stats and more players having more input as to how the dynamic of respect between coaches and players is implemented. These are some of the high water marks in my own journey which started post “dead wings” and near a long stretch of playoff appearances.

For many of you, the departures and additions haven’t been satisfactory and we know more about a Trouba transaction that failed in execution. Still, as you look ahead at the team and the league in general how do you define the current and upcoming era? In game tracking will play a role in how we see and interact and changes we can’t imagine could be available. Apple vision tied to a player camera? Can you get an immersive feel of a player’s full shift in a first person sense? Let me know your thoughts and as always, thanks to all who stop by.
