Tage Thompson may be one of, if not the, best deals in the NHL. Buffalo was all over Detroit in the early goings and it looked like the Wings were going to find a way to get an overtime point but the breakdowns caught up with them. Petry’s rear end did some damage (fitting coming off of the flu) but there were too many self inflicted wounds combined with outstanding performances for Detroit to keep the streak going.
The good news, Raymond scored his first of the year and first career short handed tally. Rasmussen scored as the 3rd line with Kasper had some strong moments (and some not so great line changes). Debrincat missed a wide open power play opportunity, that’s just hockey.
Full marks to Buffalo, and a thought for the staff. Move Compher back to the 3rd line and put Kasper on line 2. Marco has creativity that would go well with Tarasenko and Kane’s sensibilities and Compher is one of the best defensive forwards on the team. Personal opinion of course.
Let me know your thoughts, the team (in all honesty) is lucky to be at .500 and still has not taken control in a game. With 2 in the next 3 days this could be a rough stretch.
1st Period Detroit goals:
At 4:04 Buffalo scored their first pp goal of the year. 1-0 BUF
At 12:00 Buffalo scored again on a terrible line change. Kasper watched the puck go in, bad look. 2-0 BUF
With 5:17 left, on just the 6th shot of the game, Raymond started a tic-tac-goal from down in the lower left corner as a pass to Debrincat was bumped to Seider and immediately to Debrincat and into the net. 2-1 BUF
Shots: 17-9 BUF
Score: 2-1 BUF
2nd Period Detroit goals:
At 3:20 Buffalo scored again. 3-1 BUF
Seconds later, at 3:51, Rasmussen was hit with a pass from the line and backhanded the puck into the net as it fell. 3-2 BUF
Raymond finally gets one in the net to go with his 7 assists. It comes, of all things, short handed. The newly minted winger got his first career SHG as the puck was intercepted in the D zone and the Wings skated 3 on 1 down the ice. Raymond opted to shoot near sided and tied it up 3-3.
With 4:06 left Buffalo regained the lead. 4-3
Shots: 33-21 BUF
Score: 4-3 BUF
3rd Period Detroit goals:
Buffalo scores empty net as Kane misses wide open opportunity
Shots: 39-25 Buffalo
Score: 5-4 Buffalo
