I think the answer is the former without much thought. You can almost always find good depth if you know where to look. The same can't be said for franchise cornerstones.
- buffalofan19

If you buy into the wingers can't be franchise players motto, then Kane may not fit into what you just described.

Both great players, but 30 out of 30 GMs would take Toews over Kane if they had to, something to keep in mind.

Hope Murray can find the depth players AND the cornerstones we need

Yet they ended up with another cup 3 years later. Sure, there will be some growing pains, but replacing the wall is much easier than replacing the foundation.
- buffalofan19

Agreed but it may be tougher this time around if both players are taking up say 16-17 million of the cap per year.

If they had to start from scratch? Maybe

If they were adding to their current roster I would say Kane would be in the lead.

Right but the Hawks have a lot of "foundation players"

They won't all be there long term.

And 29 out of 30 GMs probably would never get the opportunity to get both. It's not necessarily a fair comparison. I also think that even if Chicago did end up only with Toews or Kane, they probably wouldn't see another championship in their era. Think Lemieux/Jagr, and the lack of success they had without each other.

Right now, it's just Toews, Kane, and Keith. The rest are replaceable, including Crawford.

When did Pittsburgh have players that compared to Hossa or Keith? It's tough to judge different eras but the Pens didn't have the kind of talent around Mario that the Hawks would have even taking away one of Toews or Kane.

Why not just give the Islanders back their draft pick for next year and take their 5th pick this year? Then draft Bennett and Reinhart or Bennett and the German Turtle? The Islanders ain't gonna tank next year. The NHL will change the lotto system anyways so the sabres will never get McDavid.

Seabrook, Hjalmarsson, Hossa and Sharp.

Also, they are 100% stuck with Corey Crawford

They can acquire replacements for those guys a lot easier than guys like Toews and Kane, just like the Rangers acquired Nash last year, and the Kings did Gaborik this year.

The loss of Kane or Toews would hurt a lot more than losses of any one of a combination of those players.

OMG, NO i'm saying trade the Islander pick for next year back to them for the pick this year. Reading is key. Please reread my statement before you say silly stuff.

I don't know why you guys are so excited about Girgensons, the guy projects as a 3rd liner, can't win a faceoff and can't skate shoot and score. Just because Paul Hamilton said he looked great in training camp all the parrots came out

The Islanders chose what year we got their 1st.

How would we get the pick they chose to keep by trading the pick they chose to give us?
