I agree. This draft is going to have more than 1 or 2 surprises.still be nice to get another tp 15 pick. NJ at 10 would be awesome. Ottawa’s 7th?
This must be what it was like to be an Oiler fan all those years, - the 4 first overall picks.

Would love to know what the NJ deal for Marky at the deadline actually included.
Ott, NJ, Det, LA, Tor will be looking for goaltending upgrades so maybe we can get a 1st in some kind of a deal including Marky.
If Conny has the go ahead to rebuild we could see a veteran or 2 available too.

I really want Tij Iginla as a Flame. Those freakin couple of meaningless wins at the end of the season better not mess that up. He is the most improved player from last year in the entire draft. He is going to be a good one. Plus, I don't want Iginla on another jersey. It doesn't seem right.

Interesting trade proposal in this link:

Calgary Flames get: RW Mitch Marner, C Fraser Minten, LW Nick Robertson, D Timothy Liljegren
Toronto Maple Leafs get: G Jacob Markstrom*, D Rasmus Andersson
*Flames retain 25 per cent of Markstrom’s remaining salary

I think I’d rather get another first instead, or maybe 2 for those guys. Marner wouldn’t have to worry about sucking in the playoffs though. Unless we can flip MM for another 1st and some prospects at a later date.

That article was clearly written by a guy who only follows the Leafs. It's not a trade that improves the Flames now or in the future. Marner's never going to waive to come here anyway unless there's an extension that makes him the highest paid winger in the league.

The deal that i think makes more sense for Flames & Senators would be :
Markstrom & Andersen (exact needs for Ottawa RHD & Goaltending)
for Korpisalo, Chychryn & the #7 OA.
Negative for us is eating the 4 more years at 4.0 mill for Korpi but that would be the only way Ottawa would even consider. Andersen & Chychryn pretty comparable(cap hits the same) except Andy has 1 extra year of a great cap hit & is a RHD., huge need for Sens to fit in with Sanderson & Chabot. Zub is the only top 4 RHS they have & a couple young guys skirting with with potential. This addresses their need to get to playoffs now.

Would Markstrom waive to go there, dunno, but there is a Swedish element in Ottawa that may try to convince him to head there. That #7 OA is the prize for me & would be huge for the Flames rebuild.

Agree its not the right fit for CGY but its fair value for both sides unlike most proposals coming out of Toronto. Like Kman states, Marner could be flipped and never play a game in CGY.

The Oilers Cackucks series has been great.

It's amazing to see how former Flames are stepping up. If Monahan had not been so injury-prone, this team would look a lot different today.

I think Tre had a lot of good ideas about team building, but he lacked the proper pieces to build around (top d and center) and he did a horrible job managing the pieces he had (Monahan, Bennet, JG, Tcachuk, Gio, Brodie). Top that with horrible free agency signings and this team is saying retool but its looking more and more like a rebuild.

I don't really see how anyone could have a problem with any of those. Maybe Tkachuk since he said that he had wanted to sign a long-term deal instead of the three-year one he signed, but who knows what the money ask was?

Monahan was broken and barely functional as a fourth liner and making over 6 million when he was traded. Bennett was a disaster in Calgary and he got a pretty decent return for what Bennett was. I'd put 75% of the blame on Bennett for his Calgary career. Gaudreau had an awful year the year before his career year, so it didn't make a ton of sense to give him a massive contract and his trade value probably wasn't much. It also seems extremely likely Gaudreau legitimately wanted to stay, but he couldn't convince his wife. Brodie's UFA year was the first COVID year, so that definitely threw a wrench in whatever the plans were, and they were a playoff team. Gio was also a COVID year, there probably wasn't a ton of interest in trading for him at the salary he was owed. It also gave Seattle an easy target in the expansion draft. If they had traded Gio, they'd have to factor in who else they'd be losing by making that trade. The team trading for him would also have to determine if he was worth protecting.

I never understand people making a big deal about teams losing players for nothing. Every playoff team is going to lose players for nothing. Most playoff teams spend assets to bring in players they will lose for nothing. If anything, Treliving didn't do a good enough job bringing in pieces at the deadline. They won the division twice and finished first in the West during the period so there was enough evidence to say they were a competitive team.

Trade Proposal 1

To Calgary: 2024 first-round pick (6th overall) & 2024 second-round pick (38th overall)

To Utah: Rasmus Andersson & Vancouver’s 2024 first-round pick

Trade Proposal 2

To Calgary: 2024 first-round pick (7th overall) & Joonas Korpisalo

To Ottawa: Jacob Markstrom, 2024 fourth-round pick

These are not my proposals but Picks 6, 7, 9, 38 & 41 would be a hell of a jump start on our rebuild.

Treliving blew his load early. The Hamonic trade was a disaster. Not fixing the dressing room when Gio split the room was a disaster. Mishandling Bennett when he first came in the league was a disaster. Signing Brouwer was a disaster. Then turning around and signing Neal was a bigger disaster. Giving Huberdeau 10.5 mil is still a disaster. Letting guys like Lomberg and Hathaway walk away was a disaster. He traded draft picks away trying to save his job, and for all the good he tried to do he left Calgary in a hot mess of a disaster.

I'm glad he’s in Toronto, he’ll turn the Leafs into a bubble team in a couple years.

That Utah trade looks a little 1 sided. The Ottawa one I’ve heard from a few different sources. Conroy would get a statue of himself outside the new arena if he pulls those trades off.

They are both partisan Flames but I think the Utah one is more realistic as I think Ras has more value than Marky but not sure how much negative value the league implies on Korpisalos bad contract.
