I understand, but trying to make playoffs with a flawed roster is what the Flames do really well.

Shame they cannot hang participation ribbons from the banners.

Sooooo what do you think of Friedman coming at saying Saros has decided to wait out the goalie market before considering any kind of extension. In particular, Shesterkin who they are saying is going to be in that $11-$12.0 mill category. Yikes!!!! That means he is going to probably want higher than Helly in that $9.0+ per year.

So all these mock trades where there are huge assets going to Nashville & many want an extension in place aint going to happen. So who gives up what it will take to get 1 year of Saros knowing he is financially motivated for the next contract.

Is it just me or does that make 2 years of Markstrom at 6.0 per look like a rockstar deal? Lebrun is also saying Markstrom still will waive to go to Jersey & Flames & Jersey are locked into some serious negotiations. Sounds like Connie isnt backing from his ask apparently because he wants that 1st, Holtz one of Seamus or Mercer. Which I think is ludicrous. But Lebrun also is saying several other teams are calling on Markstrom that were not in the market for him at the last TDL. Interesting.

I think most of us would be dancing if it was just the #10 involved straight up. Please Connie dont get fcking greedy here.

How about Marky and Mangs to Devils for 10th OA, Holtz and maybe Devils 2nd Rounder? Give or take something.

Yep! I just dont see it. There was no way that Jersey 1st at the TDL was viewed as valuable as the #10 pick today. I can see getting Holtz or Seamus in there but Flames would have to eat salary. Who knows. Just hope the Panthers win the next 3 so the trades can begin.

Mangi's cap of $5.8/mill per is more of a cap dump at this time after 2 underwhelming years, why water down the return with that. Mangi seems to really achieve during a contract year. Let him get his mojo & game back & see if you can score a really good return for him at the TDL. JMO

Lets hope where there's smoke there's fire.

Jeff Marek: The one thing that everybody wants as well, one thing everybody — well, a lot of teams, anyhow — is looking for is net-minding. So much of the conversation there has, for the past six months, I suppose, maybe longer, revolved around Jacob Markstrom and the Calgary Flames. Is there a latest on Jacob Markstrom and the Calgary Flames?

Elliotte Friedman: I think the thing here is that it was so crazy during the season. Calgary is trying to do this as quietly as possible. That’s not going to be easy. I mean, good luck with that at this time of the year. […] But they just know what a rollercoaster it was for everybody involved, including the player and themselves, and I think they’re really, really trying to avoid it. But there’s definitely something going on — I mean, New Jersey, Fitzgerald’s on record as saying he will consider moving his 10th overall pick, and I know a lot of people are looking at in goal.

A couple of other teams I wonder about there, too, anybody looking for a goalie, but a couple of teams I wonder about: Toronto, and I know deals with Toronto and Calgary are kind of complicated, but the GM in Toronto is the guy who signed Markstrom in Calgary and, just on paper, a Markstrom-[Joseph] Woll combination is a pretty good combination. So, I look at that and I say, ‘I could see why a team like Toronto would be interested in that, potentially.’ And the other team that I think is in on almost every goalie conversation is Ottawa. Now, I don’t know how Markstrom feels about that, but I was told every conversation that involves a goalie, you have to have Ottawa around it. Now, the thing about Markstrom is trading for him, he’s basically a two times $6 [million] player you’re trading for, and if your choice is trading for a goalie, especially him with that contract, or going out and signing someone in free agency that might be a bigger number, you’re very happy to take [Markstrom]. So I can understand why there’d be a lot of interest in Markstrom, but obviously a lot of people are suspecting New Jersey and there’s a few teams that suspect Toronto and Ottawa.

Saw Kevin Woodley who is connected with Markstrom camp basically saying Markstrom has checked out & not intending on playing another game with Flames. Although that was pretty obvious after his exit interview.

If Jersey doesnt want to pay the price with that #10 I wondered where Markstrom would fit perfectly. I hate saying this because we all know how much we hate dealing with the Leafs (memory of that Risebrough deal still gives me heartburn) but Markstrom would be probably the most perfect fit to mentor Woll while they have goaltending while their contending window is still open. But what do they have to send back? If Jersey dont want to give up that #10 for Markstrom & I really want that #10 but if Conroy ate 50% of Marky could we get the #23 & Cowan? I know Leaf fans would quickly say no but when you have a window closing on you, these are the type od deals you do.

Or if not Cowan maybe #23 and Minten.
I think Ott is a legit option too. I doubt they give up # 7 but #25 & #39 or #25 and Ostapchuk perhaps.

I hope he plays his way off this team for overachieving rather than underachieving.

BUT, I say keep him around and find out. If he is underachieving, he will only help the stealth tank.

Would Conny really consider moving Ras or Weegs?
The return would be significant according to this article.

More and more reports Markstroms done in Calgary. Latest rumor has him going to TO.... but Ottawa has interest but NJ has strong interest. Could be bidding war lol. What do you thing returns could be? Maybe a dark horse like LA may get him.

I really couldnt see where a deal with Ottawa would make sense but one scenario actually did make a little sense. Ottawa would send the #7, #26 & Brannstrom for Markstrom & Flames #9.
I get it, we upgrade 9 to 7 + we also get #26 & then we get a young D that is 24 RFA & needs a change of scenery. I prefer the #10 & Flames to pick 9th & 10th. But thats just me.

Don’t mind that concept. Conny taking a flier on a 24 year old Branstrom sounds right on brand. Not a huge fan of the player, but maybe a change of scenery will help get his development back on track.

One of the mocks that I came up with writing a Markstrom piece this week.

To Ottawa:

Jacob Markstrom

To Calgary:

Joonas Korpisalo
7th overall in 2024

A bit harsher than Markstrom for 10th overall straight up, but something is fishy there. It would have happened already if it was that simple.

Vladar would likely get shipped, but the Flames could buy out Korpisalo in two seasons if he really stinks.

IMG-0456

If he bounces back, great. There’s another asset to sell that has two more years of term by June 2026.

Could go really crazy and do Markstrom for Ottawa’s first in 2025. Top three protected.

I think trading for Korpisalo could be a home run for the Flames. I still think he's a decent goalie with a reasonable contract who could be the perfect guy to pair with Wolf until Wolf establishes himself. I'd try and eat money on Markstrom's contract to squeeze out another piece from Ottawa. Both goalies would have to be cool with the move though. So there's that.

Not a fan of trading for unknown future firsts though, especially with Ottawa. They very much could be next season's Canucks.

It's also time to find/create a new site. Capfriendly is dead in a month.

Like Squeaky I dont like a top 3 protected 2025 1st because I agree Ottawa has the ability to have a cinderella season.
I would actually prefer that Korpisalo & the #7 for Markstrom. My concerns are Vladar just had the hip surgery & yes he should be ready for the start of next season but..... hip surgery seems like a pretty big deal for a goalie. But Flames will have a treasure trove of cap space, so they can easily carry 3 goalies until another team comes hat in hand if they get goalie injuries. That #7 would be huge & well worth the headache of carrying 3 goalies. Canadiens did that last year.

National Hockey Now is partners with PuckPedia. I really should start using it. Don’t love their layout, but I like that they tell you which players are represented by which agents.

Ottawa would hang up the phone laughing if the deal was Markstrom and Mangiapane for Batherson and nothing else. A sweetener is like a fourth-round pick, not one of their best players. He's better, younger, cheaper, and bigger than Mangiapane plus he's a right-hand shot and he's signed for three more years at a decent number.

Does Drai get a couple games for that blatant elbow? How many games did Ras get for leaving his feet on a hit at the beginning of this last season?

If Drai is not suspended, can the Edmonton fans keep complaining about the refs?

I doubt he gets anything. Maybe a fine. It wasn't that egregious, it's the finals, and the Panthers aren't really making a big stink about Barkov being injured. If he has a broken jaw, they probably would've said something by now, and then I could see a game suspension.

Hey flames fans, serious questions:

What is the plan for Calgary? Say for the next 4-5 years.

Also do you expect want Tij Iginla to be selected 9th? Do you expect him to be there
