It was due to compensation for the players. They created real people in all but name (when college players weren't allowed to be paid "amateurism"), so players started to threaten lawsuits. EA decided to dip. Now with NIL deals player can get paid

wow. that's actually much more interesting than i was expecting.

when i was a kid i always liked when they changed the names in a game but you could figure out who they were supposed to be because the name of the 3rd baseman on the yankees would be like 2 letters off from the name of the real 3rd baseman for the real yankees.

I know in ncaa the names would just be position and jersey number. So, Reggie Bush would be RB 5 on USC. Look like Bush and even drive a g wagon a booster bought him. You could also edit names.

Best player name ever was in nhl 2002 where the devils backups name was G. Backup

That was before they had the PHPA rights and the AHL wasn't in the game. I know now, someone can't be on an nhl team in the game until they've played a game (nhlpa thing). So if the 2nd best goalie never played in the nhl they couldn't be put in

huh, didn't think that kind of poop would matter for a video game but I guess having your name in there is part of marketing for players, so there is a certain logic as to why it's significant and why they wouldn't want any joe shmo to randomly get in there.

although Bill Quackenbush should be allowed to get in any edition of the game just because of his awesome name imho.

Madden '99 on N64, I think nobody on the Browns had a name.

The Browns were an expansion team (technically reactivated) in 99, so it probably went out before they could put the draft results

all Browns players should always be nameless, it fits perfectly with how generic they are...

I mean how uninspired do you have to be to choose a football helmet as a logo for your football team, jfc.
