I'm OK with the cap hit (wasn't much choice if they were going to extend him). I'm concerned about the term. Counting next season, this is a NINE year commitment. - bmeltzer
With this extension can you honestly tell your readers that the team is rebuilding? |

hope the pens get 1. - hello it's me 2050
I still think the Flyers will have a tough time. I see a regression still for this year. Also you never know with injuries.
I could now see a trade of Farabee more possible since you have a lot of money tied up in wingers.
In 2025 the top centers look to be Hagens, Frondell and Rayabkin. Misa they seem to think might be more of a winger. It would be a good time to maybe bottom out for one.

It's the NTC that really gets me. Absolutely no flexibility in the future and another contract that will likely not age very well locking the Flyers into mid category forever more. TK will age to become a 3rd liner with 10 minutes a game at a huge cap hit that cannot be gotten out from under. I just don't get it. |

In 2024 Briere committed $119,600,000 to Tipett and Konecny. I like both players, but it just seems crazy to spend that much on wingers when the team has openly said they need to get better on D and down the middle. - Feanor
They're non-elite wingers too.

When the Laughton extension happens they'll still be selling it as a rebuild. |

Yep.
Flyers will be bad but not by design. Goaltending is the biggest question mark at this time imo. |

There was a never a possibility of a deal without a NTC involved. Only way to avoid that was to trade him.

I still feel this dances around the question somewhat. Would you have resigned him, knowing that it was going to take something similar to this, in the midst of a rebuild?

The only forwards who have a NMCs are Coots and TK, everyone else can be moved easily. The only issue there is if teh Flyers players are attractive enough to other teams.
I know it won't happen, but TK can still be moved at the trade deadline. His contract would not scare teams away. TK at 8.75 might be considered average cost of a 3rd liner in 6 to 8 years.
The team has a lot of flexibility.

You are asking a company to willfully lose a lot of money for multiple years. Everyone has a boss. Good luck to anyone who asks his boss to tank profits. - psuhockey
Not really. The Flyers fanbase has been remarkably consistent, except the last 2 years.

The Blackhawks outdraw the Flyers consistently. This is a team that's committed to a proper rebuild but also is very open an honest about it. They regularly communicate with their STH honestly, not using slogans.
Tanking doesn't have to lose you money. Also, you have to figure that you are saving millions on salaries and buyouts so your expenses can be much reduced. |

Sadly, this is why I believe they'll be on the outside looking in for the foreseeable future... that is, they'll be good enough to keep things interesting during the season, but will ultimately come up short when it comes to making the playoffs. |

1C and goalie are my biggest concerns. With Kolosov bailing on the team, the Flyers are down 1 very good option. I think Zavragin just signed a 3 year contract, so who knows if or when he will come over.

The price was lower than what I expected the Flyers to play, but the term sucks. Smaller players like TK and Cam Atkinson have a short shelf life. He will be bought out before his contract is over, just like Atkinson. |

The people who have to deal with the backend of these long contracts are rarely the people who signed them. The focus on short term benefits and lack of accountability (it'll be the next guys problem) is what drives these deals. |

It doesn't seem as though you get the concept. With the majority of other players, due to the level of player they are, don't matter. They don't in any way mitigate the NMC that was given to Konency.

No doubt. Most GM's figure if they don't win soon, they won't be around when it's a factor.

Of course, how else will you get Laughts to agree to discount his services at $5M AAV?

Any forward besides Coots and TK can be moved. I guess that's not flexibility. What is your definition of flexibility?
Half of the Islanders forwards have some form of a NTC. Same with Toronto and Minnesota. Pitt has 6
Having 2 forwards with a NTC is a good thing. Its just a shame that 1 of them is Coots and his bad contract.

I get concept of flexibility. Pretty much every forward can be moved. So technically they can do what Chicago did and trade away most of their forwards and tank like everyone wants them to do.
Being flexible and TKs contract are 2 different things.

You can bet on it! Clear cap space and the. Spend to the cap on UFAs. |
