Necas seriously signed for 2 years $6.5mil? The 2 years makes sense. But only $6.5mil per? Why? |

Makes him easier to trade maybe. As far as I can tell there are no clauses on the contract.
Or he is betting on himself, wanted a 2 year deal so his next contract will be bigger.

A player is not eligible for movement or trade clauses until he reaches the point of UFA eligibility in terms of age or accrued seasons played.

Looks like an appropriate AAV according to this. Thanks for the data.
Also shows the difference between the Flyers and the Canes. Tippett gets locked in long term while Necas gets 2 years. In 2 years the Canes will have flexibility and the Flyers will still be locked into Tippett.
Not saying either player is a better player. Just pointing out the difference in philosophy between the two clubs and how they address contracts for similar players.

His deal is 1M higher than the comparable for a 2 year deal. Necas will be a UFA in two years and if he produces, his AAV will then be much higher than Tippett's. They also can lose him for nothing

All of those things are true. The Canes also have the flexibility to make decisions in two years regardless of the players performance. The Flyers have far less flexibility when it comes to Tippett. Both players play wing and are not elite.
Would you rather have flexibility with a non-elite winger or would you rather be committed to a non-elite winger for 6 years?

Maybe if it happens enough times, it will get through the Flyers thick skulls that elite talent doesn't reach FA and trading up into the top of the draft never happens either.
But they are dumb so it may take another dozen examples for them to get it. |

Don’t go tipping your cap to the canes for this, this could cost them big time in two years if they want to keep him and they could lose him. This is more the player and team kicking the can down the road |

I hate the Tippett deal, as I do the Sanheim, TK and Couturier deals. 8 year deals should be reserved for truly elite players or borderline elite players who are still in their mid 20s. None of the above qualify. |

If a team likes and wants to keep the player long term. The Flyers situation with Tippett is the better situation. There are risks to both sides.

Gives him a hell of an incentive to produce up to the value of his contract now, which the Canes arguably need more than his long term services.
