Maybe if it happens enough times, it will get through the Flyers thick skulls that elite talent doesn't reach FA and trading up into the top of the draft never happens either.
But they are dumb so it may take another dozen examples for them to get it. - StepfordSam
Hence why they had to overpay Kevin Hayes.

I hate the Tippett deal, as I do the Sanheim, TK and Couturier deals. 8 year deals should be reserved for truly elite players or borderline elite players who are still in their mid 20s. None of the above qualify. - BiggE
When you don't have cap space you inevitably keep having to give out more years to lower AAV. And we know the Flyers almost never have cap space for reasons.

Gives him a hell of an incentive to produce up to the value of his contract now, which the Canes arguably need more than his long term services. - Tomahawk
It does and that could be a motivator. At some point the Canes are going to have to really go for it. They just lost two good defenseman and it remains to be seen if they have adequately been replaced. Can't keep bleeding players because you don't want to or can't pay them long term without actually getting there.

If a team likes and wants to keep the player long term. The Flyers situation with Tippett is the better situation. There are risks to both sides. - MJL
Agree 100%. I just think the Flyers commit long term to players who are just "good" way too often.

Don’t go tipping your cap to the canes for this, this could cost them big time in two years if they want to keep him and they could lose him. This is more the player and team kicking the can down the road - ClaudeFather
Not really tipping the cap. Just pointing out the difference between the philosophies of two clubs on very similar contract points.

IMO it wouldn't have been smart to lock in three 30+ dmen long-term at high AAV.
Transitioning to Morrow, Chatfield and eventually Nikishin was the right move. And if they aren't up to the task they'll have cap flexibility to find somebody else. Walker and Ghost are also decent stop-gaps/safety nets.
Losing Guentzel is probably the bigger blow. He was just a perfect fit there. |

You can’t keep the window open forever, in all seriousness their time as a contender ( a fake contender) is over. They just never got it right. |

Yeah, the Flyers are the poster child for poor cap management and overall incompetency. |

Was it? The Canes have been a contender for a number of years now. They've yet to break through or get to the finals. At some point, when does the cap cautiousness end and they take a risk and really go for it. Not just with deadline rentals but really stacking the team. What good is being a stable team that is really good but never good enough?

They are basically the polar opposite of the Flyers in terms of contract management.
