The real issue is it's not just TK that got the long term deal. They have 7 or 8 players that got deals longer than they deserve. A majority of those players literally cannot be traded, it is near impossible to trade them or the Flyers have to take back some sort of negative salary or add assets to trade them. Lack of flexibility year in and year out is a negative in the cap era.
Having dead money is not the end of the world. It is the constant dead money that gets you. To me dead money isn't just retained salary or buyout dollars. It also includes salary you cannot move for players you no longer want. When you have dead money year in and year out you will not be successful long term. Out spending mistakes is not a viable game plan anymore and hasn't been for almost 15 years now. - mickel25
15 years? Been over 20 hasn’t it? lol just ridiculous that Philly is literally the only team in league that continues to do this year after year. Never once changing from pre cap era. I mean how many new teams are in league since cap started? It laughable how bad this organization is. They literally play how many teams each year that never operated in era that Philly still tries to construct team with. These teams and league for that matter have got to be laughing their asses of |

Unfortunately they've committed long-term to guys who haven't got this team to the playoffs. 4 years and counting. |

That was my point. They were able to trade and buy FA's to build a team in 2010. The Flyers along with the rest of the league have not had that luxury for a while now.

cant see any realistic path in 4 years they are contending. everything and then some would need to go right. - hello it's me 2050
As long as Jones/Briere/Torts are calling the shots, I doubt they ever contend. |

Even with all their incompetence, they aren’t that far off if Michkov is as good as advertised. #1 center is a glaring weakness that could be taken care in the next draft. Just hope for a rash of goalie injuries. |

Point? First off they got absolutely every break to not only make the playoffs in 2010 but make the finals.
Did you actually think they were gonna win in 2010 with leighton?
I will say it was a great fun magical run that I enjoyed much but it was a fairytale run.
A once in a generation run.
Probably the biggest outlier to never be used as any example or benchmark of a realistic outcome for anything |

Yeah but it most likely means they are still 3-5 years from being an impact contributor to the NHL roster.

Way to many holes.

How long has Minnesota had Kirill Kaprizov? They are light years away. Like a decade away if they're lucky. Not sure what you're talking about.

I think they have a good base in defense with York, Bonk, and Drysdale. They have enough wingers on the team and in the system that can be slotted properly now with Michkov. Center is pretty bleak but hopefully Luchanko fills one of those.
#1 center and another top 2 defenseman are the glaring holes. |

You must've loved the part at 10.10 where they talk about the Flyers fanbase :
"0.00 percent of them watch hockey and 100.00 percent think they know everything about it"
does that include you?

Wait… just within the past few weeks you said that DB should not sign TK to a long term deal? What am I missing? - Flyfly
If he wanted $10M AAV. This deal is much more palatable, though at first I really didn't like it and still don't unless Briere clears space another way. |

This is the same rationale we heard about the AMac contract... that it would hurt less and less as the cap went up. Well guess what, it didn't, it remained an albatross and a huge opportunity cost all the way up until the buyout came off the books.
Hopefully TK will remain productive for as long as possible but make no mistake... ~$9M AAV for a non-elite winger is always gonna be a huge chunk of change. It's gonna force them into making hard decisions down the road. And when his production starts to dry up it's gonna be really, really ugly. - Tomahawk
I think TK is going to be very productive over the next 5 years, as long as the talent around him improves. The key will be for Briere to get some good centers on this team soon. |

The fanbase that supports the flyers current path and love Torts are the kind of fans he is referring to for the most part.
Plus this coming from a guy I never heard of on a podcast I never heard of until today. |

Another top 2 defenseman? Who is the one they already have? York and Drysdale until they prove otherwise are on their own merit, 2nd pair defenseman. Bonk has to actually play an NHL game before he is a part of the base. Right now, the Flyers need a legit #1 and another legit top pairing level defenseman.

You're not being forthcoming. After you moved off of realizing that he wasn't going to get 10M a year. You were still posting that you felt that that they needed to trade Konecny because he didn't fit the timeline. You've changed your mind about a dozen times. It all depends as usual, what you read or what you listened to that day. Whether it's a podcast, an article or a youtube video. You're incapable of coming to your own determination and are easily manipulated.

Five-years may even be generous.
Brendan Gallagher was 27-yo coming off multiple 30-goal seasons when he signed his big extension and he started declining almost immediately. I'd be surprised if TK isn't in a similar situation in a couple of seasons with the way he plays. |

Konecny played his ass off all season at a high intensity level. We saw how he showed signs of wearing down as the season went along.

Did TK wear down because he was not recovered from his injury?
Was he worn down because he was the only flyer that could drive the puck consistently?
Will MM take some of that pressure off TK?
All players wear down, even mcjesus wore down in game 7. It was obvious that he was a bit gassed |

He wore down because he always wears down. Talk to me about TK carrying a team to game 7 of the SCF before you make that ridiculous comparison.
