This is the perfect way for a number of guys to get away from their dull lives. They can be whatever they want here and make believe their “enemies” on here are whatever they believe they are. It’s so pathetic.
Apparently I work in a deli. News to me but it’s really important to them to believe that I do… |

There was definitely never an Yzerplan. Especially if your prospects aren’t seeing NHL ice and you’re shelling out cash to UFAs each summer.
Yzerman does deserve some credit for Tampa’s success but he inherited Stamkos and Hedman. I don’t believe he drafted them, if I’m not mistaken. If those two are already under franchise control, who doesn’t want that job? - roenick97
Yzerman drafted Kucherov, Vasilevskiy and Point. Without those 3 they do not win the cup.

Kucherov was drafted 58th overall, that is a lottery ticket that hasn't been cashed since by Yzerman or anyone else since.
https://www.quanthockey.c...nts-per-game-leaders.html
The closest would be Aho and DeBrincat who are very good but Kucherov stands alone in the last 20+ years in P/GP. When you factor in he's more than point per game in the playoffs, that's incredible.
Not something that can be duplicated but that's what the Flyers need. The previous poster is also correct, Stamkos and Hedman both on rookie contracts, a dream scenerio.
#1 overall elite center
#2 overall elite dman
That is the hardest part, not the rest wasn't important. You throw a young Stamkos and Hedman on 90% of the bottom teams and you are a contender.
Hell, you add them onto the Flyers and all of a sudden, with everybody on defense slotting lower, every center slotting lower, the roster would be a legit contender for the next decade outside of goaltending and with the massive improvement a hedman would bring to the defense, goaltending might not be as much an Achilles heel as it was last year. The TK contract would actually make sense.
Anyway, Yzerman had the dream foundation already laid for him and had a few longshot picks pan out and exceed their ceilings. In the last decade, not so much.
Detroit didn't have those Stamkos/Hedman #1C/#1D cornerstones to help the team. It all starts there. Maybe Raymond/Seider will help fill some of that but DET was in a different place than TAMPA when he arrived. |

To a certain extent, they will poach goals off each other. In terms of being on top line, getting minutes, first unit pp, and so on.
There will be more opportunities because MM will create them. But there will also be more of a zero-sum game of 'cancelling each other out' because of the log jam in RW. My suggestion is that unless MM moves to LW or center, TK's goal/game average might fall because of the latter effect - PT21[EDIT:corrected].
I know folks are dying to know this: In economics, this kind of trade-off is depicted below. It is always taught within the first month in the first class in Econ 101/001.

He definitely doesn’t challenge himself. MJL pays on those he knows aren’t as educated as him. JD is an easy punching bag for MJL. JD just doesn’t know he’s losing every round. |

Those were great, franchise defining picks. But there's a lot of luck involved. Tampa took Point in the 3rd round. In the 2nd round they two dmen no one has ever heard from again. In the first round they took a basket case who is out of the league at 28.

Hextall actually made objectively better draft choices in the first two rounds of 2014. |

JR was quite the hockey player back in his day but did you know that over 50% of his career earnings came from a golden parachute Flyers contract near the end of his career? I think he turned 32 in the middle of the 1st year of the contract. Only broke 60 pts once in 3 years before the lockout.
Nothing against JR but he was an aging declining asset who took his last chance to get the money with the Flyers.
As an interesting aside. Fletcher was the GM who gave Clarke permission to talk to him about a contract. Goes to Bill's "incestuous" comment earlier in the week. |

His drafting in Tampa lead to winning a cup. BriseBois inherited talent and won multiple cups.
I will say with Detroit, Yzerman has not had much success in late rounds. He found a solid Dman in Seider and a potential budding star in Raymond. He has yet to find a franchise goalie. He inherited Larkin at center. He has been trying to find talent either through free agency or by trade lately.

Yzerman is good with rebuilding a roster. I do not think he is a "finisher" though. He stumbles a little when choosing which players to keep longterm.
Brisebois leveraged an advantageous situation into multiple cups. They are still very talented even after losing multiple players this summer.

That's true, but scoring before the lockout was low, and in in 2004 he suffered that horrible jaw injury. Roenick had the best P/GP on the Flyers in those three years apart from Zhamnov, who only played 20 games.

I totally forgot about Adam Oates and Tony Amonte. Didn't Clarke make a Fletcher/Risto type trade for Oates that spectacularly backfired?
Wow, he's almost 62. How old was he when Clarke traded for him? |
