Michkov isn't gonna get a clear path to 1RW/1PP. GMDB already said as much. And remember Michkov still has to leapfrog TK and Tipp for the top offensive minutes. Torts already knows and loves those two.
Michkov will probably start with pretty limited minutes and have to work his way up, just like Kucherov did in Tampa. Maybe they'll even make him earn a spot on the PP. Chances are high that he'll be saddled with a defensive center and somebody like Cates or Hathaway on his other wing until they trust him defensively and/or he gets strong enough to fend for himself.
All the face of the franchise stuff is really not a major part of the equation. At the end of the day we're talking about a 5'9/5'10 rookie who's never played in NA before. - Tomahawk
Okay, right away, I never said Michkov was getting a clear path to the first line RW spot. I’m saying the Flyers future is writing on him becoming the face of the franchise.
Michkov becoming the future face of the franchise is a major part of the equation. Thats why he’s being handed a spot on the roster at all.

IMO you are correct, but also IMO this is insane. I do not give a poop how he plays defense. That can come later. He needs to be put in a position to score goals and create offense. It would be typical Flyers, who lack elite talent at every position, to take the one elite talent they have and not give him every possible opportunity do to what he does best. I (frank)ing hate that about Torts and this franchise.
LOL, once you hit 18, you are immune to human conditions and emotions. Once you are old enough to drink, you're immune from human conditions and emotions. - MJL
Yes because clearly thats exactly what i wrote not that hes an adult and take care of himself unlike a child. Geez theres absolutely no way for him to communicate or anticipate a language barrier. Impossible to learn the language.
Its surprising he survived without Danny there to cook and feed him.

The roster spot was a necessary concession to get him to cross over and sign.
Now he's in Torts' domain. Torts doesn't give freebies nor does he compromise (unless you can put up a heck of a lot of points for him).

The Flyers have to first make a thoroughbred a plow horse before they will let him run. They're a backwards organization.

Your examples that you used were absurd. You posted them, I just applied them reasonably. Maybe you're unaware that learning things such as a new language, doesn't happen overnight and until he is better able to communicate, it could be a cause of a struggle. . This ridiculous idea that you and a few other have, that since he is an "adult", he will not be affected by the challenges of not only trying to make his way as a pro hockey player but also to adapt to a new home, a new country and a new culture. While not having any family or immediate friends to rely on. Are you aware of why every team hires player development coaches?

Guys, there is no way to know whether or not “this is correct” until the season plays out…on the account that the future hasn’t happened yet…

It is not absurd. I get sent to work in Germany. Do I just shrug my shoulders do nothing to prepare and quit because I get homesick? No. I learned the language, I didnt have any english speaking people with me, no one sent my family with me. I adapted, learned to live there for 6 months I was there and I did my job.
You are talking about a 22 year old adult giving up on his dream of playing in the NHL because he got Homesick for 3 damn weeks....... Every other Russian, Swedish, Finnish or any other country has to deal with this. Not every player gets the Michkov treatment.
We still dont even know if this is even an issue. Flyers arent talking about it simply because they do not know either. The only verbage we got from them is that they expect him to be at Camp in September. All this complaining could be for nothing.
I don't remember that to be honest and if Torts did that it was obviously a dumb idea (akin to two defenders in overtime...etc...), but the fact remains that Laine has a reputation as being soft around the league and only interested in scoring, and getting traded again today is an indication of that. Hell, know on Torts he probably put Laine in front of the net hoping that he'd get hit in the balls by a slap shot. - Phillywhiteout
Laine number were declining before he got to Columbus. Either he is getting slower or played his way into a trade.

You should care. Every NHL team cares about defense. No one is asking him to be a Selke candidate. He just has to be competent in his own end. You cant trade high danger scoring chances with the opponent. This is the same reason why Sprong has been delegated to a 3rd line Role in WSH, DET and SEA despite top 6 production. He is among the top 15 I think in the NHL for points per TOI. He's a huge liability on D that the coaches cant have him out there against the top NHL talent. Michkov putting up 100 points is useless if hes responsible for 100+ goals against.

When when Canadian and American players can’t cut it in the NHL, they have no choice but to go overseas. Nobody is questioning whether or not they can speak the language and feeling sorry for them when they can’t.

As long as he doesnt coast he should be fine. Torts hates when players dont work hard and use their skill as a crutch to be lazy. Everything Ive seen of Michkov tells me thats not the type of player he is. He works hard and trains hard and I see him being as liked as Foerster is by Torts.
If Torts gets out of hand and Danny has to choose between Michkov and Torts, we all know Michkov will be the choice. Flyers simply cant afford to lose him

Good for you! How old were you? You don't seem to understand that people are different. Some young people can handle it, some can't. You seem to think that there is some universal response for all "adults" Now that you're 22 and can legally drink. You're immune to human conditions.

It is his choice. He's an adult right? Isn't that what you said? He can legally drink. 3 weeks gives you a glimpse of what it is currently like and what the challenges are.

Thats a great point too. I doubt KHL is bring in english speaking players to help you with the transition. It is ridiculous how everyone thinks guys need to be coddled. Like every NHLer except your generational stars has had to go through life being told they werent going to make it. Coaches say this stuff to their faces, other player may say it and even friends or strangers. These players have to go through a lot harder things than not knowing the language.

Spring is 27 years old. He didn't put up top 6 points. You don't stunt a high skilled players offensive ability to make him into a responsible defensive player. That is what Tortorella is going to do with Michkov

When have I said it wasnt his choice? My point is you are trying to say a guy who spent the last 22 years chasing a dream is prepared to give up because he was homesick. If that is his choice, then thats his choise. It is a bad one but he;s free to make it. I think it is absurd that anyone would give up on their dream so easily especially when they are almost there.

Guessing that staying above the puck on defense and flying out of the zone is gonna drive Torts crazy at first. At the very least he'll get some of the early tough love that TK and Tipp got until he's "earned" his right to cheat. How long that takes... who knows.
If the rumors are true that Torts is heading upstairs after this season then Michkov will only have to survive the initial hazing.

I’m an English speaking Canadian who went to visit Quebec for 3 days. Dear god, I didn’t know what I was gonna do with all these French speaking Canadiens around me…

Okay, so I watched the first 3 minutes of this YouTube video and it told me a couple things. The biggest thing? The kid is going to have to be coachable. You as well as others are claiming Torts will ruin Michkov. Looks like Michkov will ruin himself if he basically neglects defense and cherry picks mid ice.
Regarding Kolosov, so it appears the rumour is that Kolosov wants to be loaned for 1 more season, says he isnt ready to go over yet. Flyers Dont want to loan him a 2nd time for various reasons
1) He signed the contract, they already agreed to loan him with the expectation he would come over this season
2) They feel it is better for his development to come over this season as it would be his net and the focus would be 100% on him whereas if he comes over next season, Bjarnason will be there as well so attention would be split.
3) There is fear that if they loan him again, he just might not come at all.
Neither side here is unreasonable. Flyers have apparently offered to bring over his girlfriend as well. Not sure about any Family but it looks like the Flyers are willing to do things to make the transition better. I agree that its better for his development but Im just not sure how much you are going to get out of a guy thats being forced to be there.

You have a reading comprehension issues. I have not said that he is prepared to give up his dream due to being homesick. I don't know if he is coming back or not. If not, I don't know why and I haven't said why. It's a hypothetical at this point. I'm arguing against your point that he is 22 and can drink, so he would be immune to human conditions.

No I said he's an adult, he can handle himself and doesnt need to be coddled. You are the one with the reading comprehension issue. The fact he can drink is an example to prove he is an adult. The legal limit is there because of the responsibility needed. Many kids do drink despite being under 18 and the choices they make show.
