How many teams besides Pitt have purposely tanked and won the cup?
If tanking is the proper method why aren't more teams trying to tank?

I will give it a few years before I pass judgement on what direction is better. Am i happy with the current state of the Flyers, no, but i see enough young talent on the team to give me hope.

- WhiskeyMan

does the flyers way work? no need to answer.

enough young talent to give hope a huge lol. what kind of hope? in the "race" for the final playoff spot?

no they wouldn't and no it doesn't'. they could have easily traded off pieces with value and only left them with ex selke and sanheim (who is easily tradable) as long term contracts.
- hello it's me 2050

The Flyers never contemplated "tanking" or whatever we are calling it. I agree there. I think the Flyers have a handful of players that are basically not tradable. Those players coupled with the few good young players they have will keep them out of the bottom third of the standings in my opinion.

So I do not believe they could easily move enough players to be as bad as they need to be. Hopefully they will get lucky somehow.

Personal finance versus corporate. Hilferty gets fired if the Flyers lose money for too long because the guys at the top of Comcast only care about dollars and cents. There is no personal fulfillment whether they win or lose. Sure it’s a rounding error but corporations don’t keep writing off failing assets in perpetuity. A single owner can because it’s just a hobby for him and he has no boss.
- psuhockey

that is your take.

if the flyers tore it down I do not think attendance would suffer at all in any significant way. in fact it may improve. only think they would miss for a few years is playoff money which they do not get now anyway.

I think I would enjoy watching the process of a Flyers full committed rebuild, even if the product on the ice suffered. I just like the sport and I’d like to see the flyers progressively get better and stay good once they get there.

Assuming Michkov is as good as advertised now would be the easiest time to start the real rebuild process. The fans would have a new shiny penny to distract them from how bad the team is.

Of course, the current scenario would have Michkov distracting the fans from how mediocre the team is.

comcast lets the hockey peeps run the show. they are dope's who refuses to build properly. they chose the direction they go.

how much if any revenue you think they will lose? flyers are a tax write off for them. end of day they don't lose anything is my guess.

so Anaheim can withstand losing that much revenue but comcast cant?

- hello it's me 2050

Comcast is a business. Businesses dont tolerate losing money. They can allow hockey peeps to do their thing but there are always strings attached. Comcast doesn't care about a winning team. Comcast cares about profit. A team with an individual owner is going to be more likely to care about winning.

Comcast is not going to lose millions just to hopefully own a Stanley Cup winning team

I feel like Pitt and Chicago have not only tanked but have gotten league help. I also feel like Edmonton has gotten help but can’t seem to do anything with the help they’ve received.
- roenick97

IMO, Edmonton's issues came down to D and Goalie. Skinner is the best they have had for awhile.

Anyone watch Charlie O clip on how Flyers fans views others teams prospects compared to how we view our own? Its as if he reads this board.

I did see and its absolutely true. Theres also the notion that our young players ceilings are lower than they are.

Its like Drysdale. We saw him for what 24 games and hes declared a bust cuz he had one severe injury and then put himself in a bad position to start last season and caused himself to be hurt?

He has two seasons in the nhl wheres been perfectly healthy not to mention all his time in juniors.

Is he guaranteed to be the plsyer we hope he would be, of course not but the door is not even close to shut on him.

I also agree with his second point that our prospects have the benefit of having support rather than places like SJ where there just random guys playing for contracts. A lot of these guys will be around. We are going to see some guys transitioned out in the next two years.

Laughtons days are numbered
Flyers are already shopping Ristolainen
Seeler can be dealt 2 years from now
I dont expect Hathaway to finish his contract here
If Michkov has a great rookie year the flyers could potentially move Konecny to fill a need. They got till July to do so.

Attendance went up 4.6% for the Flyers last year compared to 2022-23. For whatever that is worth.

Flyers cant move Sanheim or Couturier unless they wave. Both have value and teams would take them. Couturier needs to have a full healthy season under his belt though first

Seeler cant be moved for 2 years. Could end up the 7th D by then.

Flyers have until July to move Konecny. After that hes locked in.

Do technically 4 guys. Could argue Risto is probably not moveable until next season. 3 seasons is likely too long. Flyers will need him to play and play well to get interest. Last season was a promising sign even if it was just s small sample size

IMO - Current players

Forwards:
Forester, Frost, MM, Farabee and Tippet will be solid NHL players.
Brink and Cates I am still unsure of but hope the can contribute as 3rd liners and not hurt the team.
Even though TK is slightly older than the rest, he is a very solid player

D:
IMO Dyrsdale will be a solid top 3 D
York will be a solid top 2 D
Still on the fence about Zamula
Prospects - Bonk, Ginning, Attard, Andrae - I think at least 3 of these will turn into solid nhl dmen
Hoping McDonald pans out as well

Goalies are what makes me drink at night. losing Kolosov really hurts. Fedotov needs pan out. Errson needs to show he is more than a backup.
Maybe Yegor Zavragin comes over and is a stud.

Its the older players I worry about
Coots, Laughts, Poehling, and Seeler

Over the next few years Laughts, Poehling, and ND will be gone.
Buyout contracts and buried contract will be gone. Ellis will be off the books in 3.
You would hope at least 2 out of the 4 first round picks from the last draft and the next draft become solid NHL players

So do I have hope yes. I am not a debbie downer like so many on this board.

ex selke has zero value and is unmovable at this time. yes they have to waive though that wasnt the point.

risto was not part of the conversation we were discussing. as I said players with value. Seeler and GH talking about not ext them as they had tradable value.

Poehling was drafted in 2017. Same year as Tip and Frost. Tippett was 10 overall and Poehling was drafted two spots ahead of Frost. Not exactly old. He’s more like a young Laughton. Which is why we should move Laughton

flyers are a little toy under the comcast umbrella. they do not depend on them to be profitable to survive in any way.

just curious how much money do you think the flyers make each year on average? I could be mistaken though didn't snider say they need 2 rounds of playoffs to break even? that was years ago to boot. if that is true they are already losing money for a long time now.

Have we lost Kolosov? Last I heard he's still with the team and expected to show up at camp although he wants to get another loan which PHI doesnt want to provide.

You're wrong. I don't argue with jd. There is no argument when he is as wrong as much as he is. I can see you're still arguing with roenick, even to the point of making racist comments due to your lack of intelligence and inability to do anything else.

How is that Optimism? Two of those listed already showed they could be on the Flyers 3rd pair. Attard and Ginning played well, they are unfortunately blocked. People are high on Andrae as well. Had a decent 1st season with the Phantoms. Another season down there wont hurt him but the Flyers need to make room on the roster so he can make the jump. Keep in mind Kimmo Timonen didnt play his first full NHL season until he was 25 years old. Lots of time for Andrae to develop. He doesnt need to be in the NHL ASAP

People are also very high on Bonk however he hasnt played a game professionally yet so hes really just a shiny new toy at this point.

A large part of lost revenue can be made up through a reduction in players salary. A rebuilding team can gradually become more competitive. A fanbase will support an exciting young team even if they aren't a playoff team.
