The entire reason for this discussion is the current regime are rebuilding using cap space as a weapon. That by itself shows just how different Briere is compared to other recent GMs we have had here. We are not in the market for high priced free agents, we are in the market to accumulate assets and they have successfully done that by taking on bad contracts just like Johansen. Has Briere gone after any high priced free agents? Any? No. of couse he has not. He has said many times that time will come, but they are not there yet.

The Flyers aren't rebuilding. This is just a pause as they wait to open up more cap space. They aren't in the market for high priced free agents because they don't have the cap space. They have all but admitted that they'll be right back in that game once the cap clears up.

Tippet is limited in terms of his goal scoring repertoire. He's basically a guy who uses elite speed to beat defenseman and a shooter off of the wing. He's very good at that and come obviously score goals doing that. There isn't a lot more to his offensive game. On his own merit, he is not close to a 40 goal player. An elite player could elevate his scoring.

I don't disagree. I just think a better pp helps him hit the mid 30s in gs. Rising tide lifts all boats and if Mitchcov is what many think he is than it could certainly elevate Tippetts numbers a bit. I don't see him as a consistent 40 goal guy, but then again who is? If you are regularly putting up 30 plus goals in the NHL you are very good hockey player these days.

I foresee Torts keeping Frost and MM apart from each other for the most part.

Yes, there were only 17 players who scored 40 or more goals last year. There are 32 teams in the league and over 800 players. When people say he has 40 goal potential, I don't think they understand the gravity of that and what it takes.

Nah get rid of him. He's a PoS and the fact that hes waited until Camp starts to get a surgery scheduled is clear to his character. He's had months to do so. Flyers are better off terminating and getting under the cap without the use of LTIR plus they can weaponize that space.

That being said, is the contract terminated? I havent seen anything that stated the Flyers have actually terminated the contract yet.

- xShoot4WarAmpsx

he would be on long term injured list. so he is persona non grata.

So is RR a POS for waiting to get his surgery? Or how about any other player who tries rehab first? surgery is usually a last resort.

To me the flyers should have just paid ryjo his money and stick him on the injured list all year. dont see what the end game or benefit really is at this time.

the optics don't look good no matter how this turns out. this could have short and long-term effects with free agents and agents in general. just another cloud over a struggling franchise who really didn't need any more bad press.

so, if they do settle this just looks petty and no real gain.

- hello it's me 2050

Why pay him if he refuses to play. The "injury" didnt prevent him from playing before the trade.

Do a little research. It started in Columbus with Torts. Than he went to Nashville and got a big payday, and was considered lazy. Traded to Colorado cause they tired of his act in Nashville. Also heard that not only were the Avs happy to get out from underneath his contract, but that they were also happy to get him out of their room! When players of his ilk keep getting traded something is up. Where there is smoke there is fire.
- Phillywhiteout

Torts is such a convenient argument, considering a lot of people don’t even want Torts in this organization. Good to know you’re in the league though. What team you play for?

Kidding aside, why would the Aves trade for a known lazy cancer after winning a cup? Maybe the Aves should listen to as much NHL radio as you.

I believe Tippett could get 40 in the right situation. Get a new PP coach and line him up on the half wall on his off wing! Set him up for one timers galore. The guy had 8 points on the PP last season which is a disgrace. FIRE ROCKY!!
- Phillywhiteout

Like Jeff Carter he may be able to do it once if the stars align perfectly, but I don't think he's actually a perennial 40-goal scoring talent. The accuracy and total bag of tricks just isn't there.

Goal scoring, Carter is a good comparison. Although, Carter was a much better all around player than Tippet is.

100%. Tipp is (frank)ing useless when he's not scoring goals.

I think the Flyers will win this case with RYJO, most likely via settlement to avoid embarrassment. I really don't think RYJO has a case here.

The Flyers have moved to terminate the contract. That doesn't point to having any interest in avoiding embarrassment. If Johansen doesn't have a case, why make a settlement?

of course, you don't think so as you love the flyers.

tell us all why you don't think ryjo has a case?

is winning via a "settlement" (say 2 million in extra cap space for arguments sake) worth the extra stain it will put on an already stained organization?

He's 25 and coming into his prime, and he has that potential (there's that word again) if put in the right positions. Of course, Torts probably doesn't want the one timers on the PP cause if you miss the net the puck can go out of the zone on it's own. Defense defense defense...lol!
- Phillywhiteout

The other thing to consider is Tippet has more shot attempts than just about any other player in the league. His problem in the past is 1. getting shots through and 2. getting shots on net. Last year Tippet made a sgnificant improvement in shots on goal, 289 shots on goal last season, 231 the year prior. If he can make a further improvement here that would help. I think am improved PP will help, but to me that can only happen if the coaching staff puts players on the first and second PP units and leaves them alone for the year to get chemistry. Last year they through stuff against the wall all season and that hurt the PP quite a bit. Tippet needs to get consistent PP time. Tippet has also improved year over year in the consistency of his play, in that there were less gaps between games where he made an impact. I think Tippet can easily score 30 goals and maybe even 35 goals. 40 goals is a real stretch and I think he would have to get really lucky to get 40 goals.

For exactly what Friedman listed in his 32 thoughts. There is no way the guy plays 60+ games and doesn't miss a practice with a career threatening injury. And then magically gets traded and can't play anymore. I also think the league has given the Flyers the nod to move forward with this. Look RYJO is a scumbag, everyone knows it, and I think the league is going to get him.

The latter statement keeps getting made. Simply not the case. Multiple players stated that he was fine on the Avs. Multiple Avs players attended his recent wedding.

Last year Tippet was 11th in the league in shots on goal, and 14th in the league in shot attempts. So its very accurate. I never stated he had the most, just that he takes more shots attempts than most players. Learn how to read and STOP embarrassing yourself!

What is that opinion based on if you don't mind having a discussion.
- MJL

Fair question. I look at his speed, his shoot first mentality, of course things always assuming the player remains healthy, and his age.

He seems to have taken a significant step this past year and improved (not defensively). He not only showed flashes, but before his injury, he was on a pace that probably would’ve put him in the 35 goal range. I also base my opinion on the fact that if he slightly improves his shooting percentage and pops in say, 5 or so more PP goals, he certainly has the ability to get to 40. The true challenge is to not be a streaky scorer but be consistent. Is it a certainty? No. Do I believe he has the goods? Yes.

He had 289 shots, and a 9.7% shooting%
The year before he had 11.7% on less shots.
Hypothetically, 12% on 300 shots is 36 goals Which is not necessarily out of the question, which puts him in the ballpark. Is it easy? No. But I do believe he can get there.

Tippett was 11th in the league in shots. 3rd in the league in shot attempts per 60. 14th in actual shot attempts.
