I had completely forgotten about trading Kase’s rights for Rizzo. Kid had some good seasons with Denver. Let’s see if he makes a good Phantom this year.

He was noticeable pretty much every shift. His goal was the result of great patience. He’s slippery and seemed to end up with the puck on his stick always. Also some fantastic passes. He was seeing the entire ice and looked like he was way above the others on the ice. Now this is game one with a bunch of other rookies but for this night he was everything as advertised.

Also, Jett looked good as well. With one rookie game sample, the future looks bright. Also Bonk was in the bumper position on the PP and played really well. Rizzo with a goal as well.

Also, it seems to me he wasn't waiting the goalie out. He either deliberately tapped it back to himself off of the flailing goalie pads (which is weird and impressive) or just stayed with it. Hard to tell.

I found the goal on a YouTube short. Seemed like he just stayed with it, to me. But the angle is a poor one.

Maybe there was some trickery there, but you can’t see from what’s provided. I just saw short, swift jabs hoping to stuff it.

Edit - oh, no. He did bring it back to avoid the pad. Looked like a quick toe drag down low, and then went around the goalie’s skate. It almost looks like he does it twice, once to avoid each skate. It’s very fast.

Once you pointed out to look for that, it became a little flashy. This one has the best zoom in on it.

I dunno if one can be patient and swift moving at the same time, but it sure looked like he managed to combine the two when you see that short with some better zoom.

I wish that we had a better camera angle. This kids hands are magic if he is pulling off moves like this.
He makes it look so natural.

That little yo-yo move/what you are calling the toe drag is what I thought was him rebounding the puck off the pads. This is a much better angle.That was sweet.

yeah, it’s not a toe drag. At least the first movement wasn’t. I wasn’t sure what it was based on that angle, but it showed off some slick moves at a high speed.

I think that when MM tries that first move, the goalie's pads are set against the ice expecting MM will try to jam it in. Doing that little yo-yo move probably makes the goalie flinch a little forward, the left pad is not quite as tight and probably even rises up a little, and he uses that opening to tuck it in .

No need to over analyze one goal. He is a player with elite skill playing against rookies. He should be the best player on the ice. We'll get a far better read on where he is at compared to the rest of the league in pre-season and of course, the regular season.
