Isn't it if you go by the percentage of cap that a player consumes, then Crosby's contract is pretty much in line with subsequent contracts of top players?

So even if we agree it was only the last 2 years he was underpaid (some may say 3) that's one third of his contract where he was underpaid or overperformed depending on which way you want to view it. I'm not surprised he got some make up money now in his new deal and I'm not too upset about it either really.

Curious if you think Marner or Matthews have been overpaid in any of their past or current salaries?

I'd ask about JT but I don't think anyone is going to not agree he is overpaid. lol

I keep hoping someone will set the 'take a bit less' bar in Toronto from that small group of the elite / top level players............feels like I'm still waiting and I'll be more apt to have success if I shift to just not overpaying or not overpaying by TOO much.

Well, Willy was grossly underpaid when you look at the impact that guy made and his salary… at least in the last few years anyway. The problem is that the other 2 Mitch’s and JT kinda went the other way. Mitch overpaid throughout his contract in my opinion. JT really only this past season and I’m thinking he would sign a sweetheart deal for the Buds if given the chance.

Mitch needs a pay cut or at very very most stay at the same number to me - and that’s cause cap going up.

If/when JT takes less to stay in Toronto it's along the same lines, just that JT has obviously had much less career success than Crosby and is not at the same level as Crosby clearly. That being said I would still bet what he takes to stay (if he does) 'home' will be less than some other teams were willing to pay him on the open market - same as last time he signed with the Leafs.

There were reports that Matthews could have got more on his last deal if he went to free agency just not the type of gap between what other teams may have paid him and what Toronto did that makes a huge difference. Also (and perhaps most importantly) the entire 11M JT contract is the biggest issue in the Toronto cap issue. 11M for him set the bar way too high for the much younger stars coming up....and here we are.
