Entertaining game.

67 is alive and well. Looks like a lock.

Sens surprisingly good.

They let Woll get shelled, hopefully nothing serious.

O.E.Holl might be in for a rough year.

Overall not too shabby

I'm not sure how PTOs work, can another team look at what he's done and offer him a contract, or do the Leafs have dibs?

For me, I think the takeaways from that game - noting that it's early - were that the young kids we have in the system are probably not threatening the roster at this point. Maybe Cowan - maybe. But Grebenkin isn't there yet. Webber really isn't there. He looked poor in the rookie tournament before playing tonight and being awful. Quillan, despite being saddled with Reaves, was still completely invisible (-2 on the night and outshot 15-3; Reaves by the way was -1 and outshot 10-1).

I don't mind being wrong - especially when it actually benefits the Leafs! - but Pacioretty looks like he still has game. It's preseason and the opposition is easier, but he looks like a vet you take a shot on.

The D definitely looked off together - mishandling pucks, missed assignments, missed positioning - things that I'd expect to resolve themselves quickly enough. McCabe is better than his awful game tonight (-4, outshot 15-6) but it was still terrible. Liljegren, as previously noted, looked lacklustre and disengaged. Rielly and Tanev didn't have great chemistry and had a number of unforced turnovers from just poor puck handling.

We'll need to see a lot more of out OEL to know, but I saw him in the playoffs last year and he is certainly better than the tire fire he was tonight.

That said, Matthews, Knies, Tavares, Pacioretty, Nylander and Marner were all fine. Domi had good moments and several poor ones.

It's a process. In some cases you're just getting in and getting your timing and legs back into it - so I don't take much away from it other than the guys who really didn't look ready and those that were more apt to make the team than you thought.

There's no real dibs process that I'm aware of - you could offer him an actual NHL contract and he could opt to sign it. Most players and agents would check in with the team they are presently on the PTO with, I'd imagine, to see if there was interest in matching the deal first - that's the classy thing to do (so I simply imagine in the interests of maintaining a good working relationship you'd do it).

I think it was this offseason that Motte was in the process of signing a PTO with Toronto when Tampa offered him a real contract.

That Feller might Lead the Leafs in pre season scoring. Then he signs with the Habs?

lol I’d accept it just to see a rebuilding habs team turn back to him

Seriously tho, I know McMann wasn’t around tonight but a third line that’s Pacioretty JT and McMann seems… well… damn nice in that roll.

Webber being slow, gangly, falling down too easily and failing to read developing plays has nothing to do with Liljegren.

Webber has size - and hey we all know you can't teach size - but he has a long way to go to be NHL-ready.

Don't disagree.

I have to find a new whipping boy on defense, Brodie's gone

First game of pre season, not a lock yet, still just trying to find my groove.

I'm leaning Lily.

It looks like he is enjoying being back in a big Canadian hockey market. One good year with the Leafs. Then he heads to Montreal for his final year, retires a Hab.

Betcha if he's healthy, you can expect a minimum of 20 goals from him.

I watched the middle period and then some highlights on NHL.com and a few Leafs blogs.

It's the first game of the preseason, so all observations should be taken with a generous sprinkling of salt.

Somehow, the Leafs never seem to address their backend issues (heh), despite perpetually bringing in new supporting cast members for Rielly. Poor suffering Rielly who has been pegged as a #1, when on any deep team he would be a #2 or #3 at best. I'm sure Rielly is happy to have a healthy Tanev to share the firing squad with. Both of them are lined up, blind-folded, have cigarettes dangling from their lips, and both are just waiting for the crack of the muzzle.

Rielly, always the bride and never the bridesmaid.

Get used to this version of OEL. For a guy who came out of a tire-fire in the West, I've actually watched a bit of his game over the years. If you are hoping to find the right partner to carry OEL's defensive dead weight, good luck finding that guy on this roster. Who? McCabe? Why punish poor McCabe like that? McCabe is solid, but is he good enough to have a partner who can't defend? Unless OEL puts up Norris numbers, any pairing he is on will be dragged down. Get used to it. He flourised on the Panthers, because of depth and role. Maybe Berube remolds him....

It's pretty obvious that Lily and Benoit are not top-4 guys. If you have either or both of them in your top-4, then you have problems that remain unaddressed.

If Tanev pulls a Muzzin, you are back at square one.

Up front : no worries. Everything will pan out offensively. It looked like a mess, but it always does in the preseason. The offense will settle in and be fine. Patches will probably stay and do fine until he gets hurt again, which is hopefully during the Leafs Cup parade when he drunkenly trips, falls, tears his Achilles again, and drops the Cup in the gutter.

I say it every year: this fanbase has perpetual PTSD that gets reactivated every season.
