IMO, you can't say that, Cobb didn't play against the best players of his time, Rose's to me is more impressive

Couple other points;

1. Rose bet on his team to win, i know you can't bet, but he wasn't throwing games

2. I refuse to judge him as a horrible human, as I never met him. I learned a long time ago to judge people for yourself, not some one else's opinion.

3. No one played as hard as he did for as long as he did in any sport.

- vabeachbear

There is no denying his accomplishments or his hustle and tenacity...but

1) Doesn't matter if he only bet on them to win. Say he bets on his team 5 days in a row and not on the 6th, what does that say to the bookies. He knew the rules, he ignored them.

2) He admittedly was abusive to women and had an admitted affair with a 14 year old when he was in his 30's (though he said he thought she was 16)

3) He had meetings with both Giamatti and Selig, in the 1st case they were willing to protect his eligibilty if he admitted to gambling, he refused. In the Selig case, he promised to admit his faults and never gamble or be associated with a casino, and he would be re-admitted. He shook Seligs hand, and then walked directly into a casino card show to hawk his wares.

Rose was a great player, his lack of admittance to the hall and his banishment from baseball were all products of his own fault that he was given a chance to correct many times.

Oof. Tough blow for #GoHabsGo   : Canadiens announce defenseman David Reinbacher underwent surgery on his left knee this morning.

He’ll be out 5-6 months.

Awaiting decision now - surgery or not for Patrik Laine.

Nice play by Jones on the goal by JD, shot for the rebound and it paid off.

For what it's worth Korchinski had a good start so far. First shift won the board battle, got the puck around to the wing. His third shift used his feet to beat the forecheck and then cut back to lose the attacker, skate the puck out of danger and kill the attack. He is looking the part with Murphy right now in this game.

8 in this is the game to gauge Spellacy. Legit NHL opponents and even more so legit NHL speed.

Commesso is quiet, man. Always has been as the all time SPG leader at The Program!

KK knew a big hit was coming but the he took it to make the play. ......... This is the new PBP guy? Sounds quite a bit like McConnell, and that's a good thing. He's mixing up a couple names but sounds like a fine addition.

I don't know if it's just his long legs, but Crevier just seems so slow still. I know at his size he won't have the quickness and I do like some of what he does, but still really question if he has the speed for the NHL level.

His reach negates some of that slowness if not all. Plus, like that read in the Ozone, quick good reads erase slowness too........ I don't think he makes it thru waivers.

He got an assist on that goal. He does not belong in the NHL.

Nah, that wasn't on him. It's on the guy who gloved the puck down into the crease. Good try though bud.

Nice to get the game with Direc TV. I hope the Hawks play their regulars Friday as well, get guys used to playing together. A little rusty with their passing and timing in the first. Team speed does look good, just timing and passing needs some work.

Agree, BB. Even KK detractors have to say he's improved since last yr.... And yea, paired with Murphy and slotted properly with 3rd pairing matchups and minutes he fits.

Think MTL has any interest in Kaiser, Crevier or Phillips? Be a shame to start losing interesting prospects to waivers......... Read somewhere it may have been Reinbacher may have had a knee problem MTL didn't know about when they drafted him.

Can't lie that 2nd goal against was really bad by KK.

One thing I've noticed about Crevier this preseason, spends a lot more time along the boards instead of shooting lanes.

The turnover was just as much AA's fault and KK got back and the play wasn't going to amount to anything until Reichel gloved the puck down into the crease, that's on him. He should have just batted the puck away, it wouldn't have been a hand pass. Instead he played it right down into the crease while proceeding to skate backwards beside/behind the net instead of protecting the puck. It was a turnover, but the only reason it resulted in a GA is a dumb play by Reichel.

And the second goal, yeah the puck flipped of his stick in the corner when he bobbled it, but the rest of the team forgot to defend and let someone just come all alone down the slot. That's not only on him either, that was bad defense.

We gave away the puck 24 times tonight as team, that was a collective problem.

Goal 3 an NHL goalie should have that one. Wasn't a great one to give up.

Goal 4, not good positioning on the PK, forwards running around, Jones out too much, and Vlasic unable to cover two guys around the net.

Goal 5 was tipped, but I didn't think Commesso looked focused in on that either.

Goal 6 poor positioning again and Commesso was completely fooled and floundering around.

Goal 7 was just kind of awful luck, Murphy tipped it with his glove, tough luck pretty much there.

Honestly, It was a pretty bad game overall for the team and Commesso didn't look good IMO. Probably some of that is nerves but he didn't seem locked in IMO.

Thanks for the recap, didn’t watch the game. In non Hawks news, P Laine diagnosed with a knee sprain and expected to be out 2-3 months, that could have been so much worse.

That's one way to look at it. The other is competition was much stronger in Rose's day. Do you really think Cy Young could win 511 games today?
- rpeters01

Young played in the spitball era. He probably wouldn't win 511 games, maybe just 450 today, but I get your point...... IIRC the yr Ruth hit 60 he hit more home runs than any team TOTAL of homers that yr! Would the Chinaman in LA do that?

Two sides to a coin and I have time for both sides...... Cobb spent 15 yrs of his career when the spitball was legal. Back then they used a couple baseballs per game. By the 5th the ball was near black, especially with the spitball. No lights anywhere and many times by the 7th-8th it was getting dark. They traveled and SLEPT on trains 1/2 the yr. Primitive medical care and science. No artificial turf hits.

Rose didn't have to deal with that but Cobb didn't have to deal with the sport open to the world. These days 2-3 guys per roster throw 100.

Add bad bounces from horrid fields, air travel today and cutting edge science/surgeries, 15ish teams back in the day, too many today(?), video to study, each club had 12 farm teams and on and on both for and against which makes this never to end debate awesome.

But no man, Cobb was the stolen base leader until Brock or Henderson and his .367 lifetime BA is mind boggling and say what you will Ty Cobb would rip your eyeball out in public to win a ballgame, hell to steal 2nd spikes sharpened and high. A Jordan compete physicosis. In fact, a total physicosis he owned thru life and quite probably a murderer.

Good ole Pete couldn't even hold a position going from 2nd, to 3rd to a slap hitting first baseman who couldn't run.

Tough crowd, BB. Commesso showed some damn fine reads stopping some Grade A's. Excellent rebound control from a solid efficient foundation. At least two shots stopped that were redirected.

After a fun and solid 1st period for the fan Hawks looked like last yr. No doubt a better club than last yr but the 2nd and 3rd they were out-positioned, out-skilled, out-skated, out experienced, out-paced and simply out-played in every way, just like last yr.

Would agree Mrazak probably would have kept em to 4 or 5 but the 2nd yr pro showed pretty good. What he face, 40-45 shots?
