Forsberg to start tonight. Ugh.
Meanwhile, Korpo looked bad for the Bruins last night. |

Assuming Zub is out for a lengthy period of time with his 2nd(?), 3rd(?), 4rth(?) concussion and we put him on LTIR.
We decide to run with JBD for a few games .
Sanderson/Hamonic, Chabot/Jensen, Klevin/JBD.
Then let's assume it really is not working well. Do we look for a more permanent solution through a trade? And no .... not another slow guy like Shattenkirk. Hamonic is enough.
Right handed d-men like ....
Liljegren from Toronto
Lyabushken from Dallas
Obviously I am looking for guys that may cost something like Crookshank, a 3rd round pick ..... generally not too expensive but taking $2-3 million in salary off cap heavy teams. Any thoughts. Ideally defensive oriented, plays a heavier game.
Do we also start looking for a good back-up goalie. We can always demote Forsberg to Belleville or the ECHL to let him try to find his game. Obviously put him on waivers first to see if anyone takes him. |

That was a truly embarrassing lack of effort on display - really disappointing to see it come from Giroux. Can't recall which hockey pundit said it recently, but noted this team has some deeply ingrained losing behaviors to unlearn. Talent is there but they far too often fold like a deck of cards and appear to give up on the play. |

PP awful. Puck discipline awful. Forsberg disappointing.
Jensen is looks good. 3rd and 4th lines doing their jobs.
But no real offence being generated. And they seem to be having problems exiting the d zone. Again |

absolutely fascinating how NJD players always seem to get the puck in the sens zone while OTT cant do crap in NJD zone. and this is true for OTTs other games too how the other team never seem to have trouble getting the puck in OTT zone.
this team is no different from last season. |

Forsberg at least had a decent game. - PogBoi
Agreed, Forsberg played well enough. When a 0.914sv% isn't enough, then maybe you just didn't play well enough as a team to win the game. In their defence, they hit at least 3-4 posts in the game, and sometimes you just get unlucky. However, that lazy pass by Giroux on the PP was concerning... the game was only 1-0 at the time, with all kinds of time to come back. I'm sure he'd be the first person to take responsibility, but that just felt really disengaged. |
|

And NJ missing 2 of their top 4 D.
It wasn't a terrible game we just didn't look good enough to win. And we didn't.
And something is up with Giroux. Did he ever play against Travis Green when he was a player? He seems to have less of a role this year. He's moving a little slower, not as jazzed to come out and get stuff done. |

I was a bit surprised by the effort last night. I felt Forsberg came to play. I don’t think he looked confident, but his positioning was much better. Nice to see a player bounce back after a forgettable game for him.
Outside of the LA game, there is just something off about the way this team plays so far. There’s a bit of lack of urgency and attention to detail. I am not sure what is going on with Tkachuk. His play seems uninspired and always seems to stop skating and glide when the puck is close to him when attacking. Giroux’s play has seemed to have taken a step back, although he did seem to play better after his terrible giveaway.
Ironically, over the first few games, it seems that the players that were not part of the team core last look the most effective/consistent. I wonder if the losing state of mind is still working and harder to shrug off than anticipated.
Still very early but the game last night should have been a more energetic affair. Still a positive to be .500 after the first 4 games. It could be worse.

NJ is a good team. Felt their forwards were faster and had more skill, which led to the Sens getting hemmed in.
And the posts didn't help.
Felt like the Sens were getting 'pushed' (aka light cross checked) to the ground a lot.
NJ has two monsters in Seigenthaler and Dillon. |

I see OTT starting a 2nd rebuild after this season, this is not like OTT was playing well/dominating other teams in their 4 games and had just bad luck that would eventually end, they have been dominated in 3 of 4 games, got lucky VS FLA, got owned by MTL and NJD and both OTT and LAK sucked harder than a black hole that game.
their PK is so passive that its like they are doing nothing, they playing the same dj smith stile of let the other team shoot, hope they don't score, hope to get the puck and hope to leave the zone with the puck to do some offence, the other teams players are way to often left alone in the slot for great shots while OTT players don't even know were the front of the other teams net is.

I agree with the PK. I have a feeling the strategy might be trying to force teams to have clear shots that the goalie can see as opposed to allowing shots with traffic. However, when watching, it looks passive and more dangerous at times. The clear shots should never be from high chance areas.
With the contracts this team has, I don’t foresee a full on rebuild but you could see a massive retool. It’s possible that players are playing higher in the depth chart than they should be and that might need to be addressed should this team miss the playoff by a large margin.
However, it’s still early in the year and the Sens have not been completely out of any game this year. That’s a small silver lining of positivity. It takes time to adjust to a new coach and this team has played 2 games without their #1 goalie. I’d give this group a month before declaring anything. Should the Sens be in the 15-20 spots in the standings (technically 21st right now) by then, they should be in for a competitive year.

retools do not work, OTT don't have the prospect pool for it to even come close to work, OTT will not get comparable players when they trade Brady, chabot, Bath, ullmark. OTT was finished when dorion traded 2 first for players that are gone and wasted a top 10 pick on boucher. and staios (frank)ed OTT further by trading chych for a guy who will be in OTT for only 2 years and that will be 36 when his deal is finished.
OTT was completely dominated by MTL and NJD in those game, OTT got owned in 2 of 3 period VS FLA and ullmark stole that game.
they still playing the same way with green as they did with smith only the PK is far far far worst.
the whole its only 4 games crap goes out the window because they have not change AT ALL the way they play from last year.
NJD is a great comparable, both team sucked last year, both teams got a new G and a new coach yet OTT sucks hard while NJD is dominant so far.

Atlantic
1. Florida
2. Toronto
3. Tampa
Central
1. NY Rangers
2. New Jersey
3. Carolina
-------------
7. Boston
8. DONT MATTER (not ottawa)

Was Ottawa dominated last night? I missed the game but looks like they were at least in it.
We may be in the area of starting another rebuild. But what would that entail? Also need to remember their forfeiting a first at some point in the next two years. |

re 4 games into the season. New players, new coaching staff, new management team. But the "chicken littles" sky is falling crowd is out in full force. I don't think some will be happy on this board until the Sens do a rebuild and they can utter "I told you so" ..... but they will never be happy even during the rebuild. LOL.
I am of the mind that it will take 20-30 games for this team to start to shed its bad play, and unlearn the bad habits they have collected over the years. Change does not happen overnight. It takes lots of practice and effort to overcome bad habits. Why do people here think it should already have happened. Maybe the first bad habit to be overcome is the negativity that many on this board have to the Sens team. LOL. If you can't change your habits, how do you expect the players to change their bad habits overnight. You guys kill me. LOL. |

Let’s not overreact 4 games into the season. If you told me before the season that the Sens have a win against the defending cup champs and a win where the Sens allowed 7 goals, I’d probably say you’re nuts.
While I don’t think Ottawa has played a great game yet, they certainly have not been outright dominated in any game. I sense you’re watching games ready to jump on every little mistake. No one is expecting this team to be a top 5 team in the NHL but a middle of the pack team challenging for the playoffs. Those types of teams will still have areas to improve in their game.
I’d be interested to hear your strategy for a rebuild when so many players are signed on long term. It’s a hard league to trade away contracts in today’s NHL.

It was on TSN where they said there were some losing mentality that needed breaking.
On us fans, I agree that people are a quick to be doom and gloom or glass half empty, but when you've seen this before and it always ends the same way, outside the playoffs, its understandable that people may end up jumping to that conclusion. |

I'm not so down on them from that NJD game. I think in the first alone there was 2 posts, a near miss by Sanderson on the open side and a missed opportunity by Perron on an open net.
If the air was any thinner or thicker in the CTC it could have been 4-0 going into the 2nd.
A .914 out of Forsberg was not bad as well and Markstrom played very well.
I think we competed pretty evenly with NJ most of the game which is what you want against a team that is well set for placing high in the Metro.
The statistics and the optics seem to conflict for me on what the Sens need to improve on.
Watching the 3rd and 4rth lines and they look great but then you see:
Perron 0P -3
Gregor 0P -2
Amadio 0P -2
Pinto 2P -4
Gaudette and MacEwen being the standout at 1P +2 and 2P +2 respectively.
Of the core players Chabot still seems to struggle at 2P -5
Tkachuk I'd like to see pot more but Stutzle, Tkachuk, Norris and Batherson while not too flashy to start are on pace for what we would expect them to finish with by Seasons end.
I think each game so far we have seen them play, ever so slightly, better than the previous as despite the loss to NJD I think it was a way better game than LAK and MON games. |
|
|
|
that was a excellent 1st period vs tampa, they need to play like that every game for 3 periods.
followed by a 2nd period collapse.....shocking
and a lucky goal by OTT. |

Another discernible change this year is puck luck. This team has caught a few 'off' performances from opposing goalies already, which happened far too frequently in the other direction last year. It's nice to see. |
