Agreed.
He was out sick with something too last week right?
If flu or COVID, boy let me tell you, I played a tournament 3 weeks removed from COVID and it was rough... just gassed all the time.
JT is the least of my concerns long-term with this team. If he wants to stick around and they can make the numbers work, great.
More concerned with Marner and what kind of astronomical cap hit he's going to be asking for. - gravyface
I'm concerned that Treliving feels pressure to sign Marner. But I'm also considering that if Treliving and Berube are going to work together to build the best team they can as a management team, then the input on Marner's value has to also come from him.
He sees what we don't - how the team values him, what his contributions are and what his shortcomings are. The Leafs have their own internal analytics and statistics department that is likely measuring the harder to quantify things - like battles won/lost, play reads and so on.
At the end of the day they have to weigh what Marner is bringing to the table and decide if the negatives in his game outweigh the positives. It's too early to see how he's going to change and adapt under Berube - if at all. I don't want him banging and crashing into people. There's no point. He's not physically built to win those battles. But we need him engaged, in puck pursuit and taking pucks away from guys in engagement (which he has done well - tied for the league lead in takeaways with McDavid at this early stage of the season).
He has to work on not forcing a play that's not there and learning to not be "the guy" when the other team is on him. Don't make the risky pass, make the safe one and try again. He could use a bit more of Willy's patience and probably a bit more net drive - like we did see from him 2-3 years ago.
Another positive this season? Marner has been quite effective on the PK - Matthews has probably been the best, leading in most categories - but Marner not only has solid upper-half numbers in most suppression categories, but in the eye test he seems more posititonally sound and more engaged in this system.
The made the mistake of overpaying Willy. Does that mean they need to overpay Mitch now, too? Because if they do, they are going to push themselves further into the box that they've been trapped in for years. |

On a different topic (and because in the last blog I saw Monkey's last post) assuming most folks agree Willy was overpaid in his contract that just kicked in, my ? is how much do folks feel he was overpaid by?
Lets assume there was no prior overpayments to any Leaf player (namely Marner or Matthews) what do you think Willy was worth on the open market so to speak?
I do agree he is slightly overpaid but in looking at the deals Pasta and DrySaddle have I don't think it's by as much as some others do. |

From the last blog about the amulet thing (which i just found out in here)
People believe dumb things. If he or the multitude of other people who believe in this want to believe in it and its causing no harm. Then whatver imo.
No worse then someone believing "god" gave them their skills or watches over them.....well the amulet thing is nowhere near as bad as that |

Context: I was on the marner and matthews were overpaid train, i also said when willy signed his hold out contract that he was overpaid by 500g's but that it wasnt a big deal. I later also said he outplayed the contract the last two years of it.
For willies recent contract....i was hoping for 9.75 - 10.5.
Definitely shouldn't have gotten more than pasta imo.
But its signed and delivered, so it is what it is. Hope he scores 50!! |

It's not awful. Like if I were doing those contracts I'd probably have given Willy $10.5 - $11m and Marner $11m - $11.5m.
Now that said there are some obvious things that probably have to be noted: Willy has been very, very engaged this year. He's been very noticeable in his own end on the back check and in pursuit of the opposition when they have the puck. This isn't exactly new . . . we've all seen it before . . . but the consistency of it over most of this season has been something I've noticed.
This was something that you used to see more of from Marner, but I believe I'm seeing less of it in the past few seasons. Something that I note is that Marner has shown marked improvement on the PK this year and that may translate into more 5v5 pursuit and recovery in his own end.
As I said last blog I don't need Marner to blow people up - but I do need to see him engaging with the puck carrier and being in the way, creating an obstacle, stripping those pucks - doing what he used to do. If you do that, are a very strong PK contibutor and you're a (basically) 100 point player, I'm not going to complain about the $11.5m salary.
Based on the fact that Willy is somewhat overpaid, I figure Marner's ceiling is closer to $12.5m on this team - which is insane because it's more than I think he'd get on the open market based on his play right _ now_. But if Marner does regain his full form under Berube and gets back to playing like the guy who made Willy look like poop for years, good things can happen. The key thing for me is - and we all know - he has to play through the tough hockey. He won't be as effective - no one can be - but he has to play through it and keep trying. If he doesn't do that, I don't think we can afford to keep him no matter how good his other contributions are.

How?
Because a small percentage of people may buy it?
BS.
People have the ability to do research before buying.
I dont believe JT has said (or i haven't seen him say) that its directly related to him healing faster and stronger. |

Thanks for sharing, for sure Willy's deal was a big time underpay the last 2 years.
Pasta's new deal that kicks in next year pays him 11.25M per year I think so Willy got 250K more than him. I think their contracts should be close/similar, we will see which of them should have got more than the other over the next 7/8 years I guess!
Drysaddle's contract is one that could be a huge anchor being 8x14M per and his history of injury but again time will tell I guess.

But willy was overpaid his first two years...so it evens out.
Pasta has a cup and is a beast all season and playoffs. Willie hasnt reached that level yet. But he has improved year over year and has been our most consistent playoff performer.

The first year Willy was a disaster. He didn't come from Sweden ready to play and due to the late contract, he carried the 6th highest cap in 2018-19 while playing 286th in the scoring race. Each year after that he did outpace his contract (although not always drastically):
42nd in scoring; 61st in cap
64th in scoring; 69th in cap
34th in scoring; 72nd in cap
20th in scoring; 86th in cap
10th in scoring; 98th in cap
The Leafs definitely got value out of Nylander over the course of that deal. Year 1 was a dog, but it was doable due to the cap flexibility they had that season (since Matthews and Marner weren't done the ELC for one more year).

So is a whole bunch of stuff in health food stores, along with a bunch of stuff that is regularly covered by insurance benefits like chiroquacktic, homeopathy, naturopathy, etc.
I'm sure somewhere the amulet people have a disclaimer that none of their claims have been approved by anyone.

Me too!
I just started, but I'm having a lot of fun.
We scored 5 in the 7th last night. Their skip missed an easy shot - steam was coming out of his ears.
We were on cruise control in the 8th - 3 point lead. Our skip's last shot - they were lying 2, so all he had to do was an easy take out. He didn't get it.
All their skip had to do was draw to the 8-foot - it was wide open. He put it through the house. Poor guy was so mad at himself, kept apologizing to his team. It was borderline awkward for a few minutes at the drinks table afterwards. |

So are half the vitamins and "health foods" being sold. So is buying a star or property on the moon/mars (its a real thing), so are so many other "healing stones and bracelets" that have come and gone or still exist, horoscopes, palm readings etc
How many damn people endorse Qray.
You have a choice to not buy it or buy into it.

Just to clarify....
Pasta's deal started in 23' (last year) and Willie's this year.
11.25M in 23' was 13.47% of Cap
11.5M in 24' was 13.07% of Cap
and b/c it's a part of the how much should Marner get discussion
12.15M in 25' will be ~ 13.1% of the Cap (projected to be 92.5M)
