Matthews / mccabe coughs up the puck.
Boom
Goal

- Fakepartofme

I missed the first (fortunately?) but that was a terrible play. McCabe throws a one-touch bouncer to Matthews in his own slot with the goalie out of the net? That's terrible decision one. Matthews panic tosses it back to the corner and then follows up and both he and McCabe lose the battle.

Now the thing I like about this is that we've seen this for years. We forgive, too often, Matthews and Marner and whomever else for losing those battles when they need to - at a minimum - tie up the guy and stop the puck from making it's way to a dangerous shooting position. Not enough intensity and I hope that Berube finds a way to get that out of them.

Berube laid into Matthews.... which is great. I wonder if Marner throws his gloves when he gets that treatment?

This could be a very long season.

I'm already looking forward to the off-season when decisions on Marner and a drastically salary reduced (or ejected?) Snakevares take effect.

Early days yet but this slow start to the year has been frustrating. Perhaps the team is still gelling under Berube, but JFC the top lines look horribly disinterested (excepting Knies).

Agreed it was nice to see the coach call out the superstar captain when needed.

As far as the comment about Marner throwing his gloves if it was hime 🤣🤣🤣

I hate the powerplay deployment and setup. They shoot from too far away with no traffic in front. It's worse than last year's setup. It looked better in the first two games. The more Savard has tinkered with it the worse it looks.

The Leaf power play is 🤮.

WTF is Mark Savard doing? That much talent and he can’t get an effective power play going?

Yep. Divide into two units. It needs to be blown up.

Need to look at Rielly too. For me the big changes need to include those 3

That’s exactly what this team needs. Getting treated like “gods” to much in Toronto according to Marner.

They’re not getting to the next level without some tough loving.

Safe bet to say “Savy” doesn’t skip many meals for sure. Lol

I am onboard with the recommendation to split up the top end talent into 2 units and hope one of them can click because the load up PP1 to the max thing ain’t working.

It’s too structured if that makes sense. Have the guys go out and do whatever the hell like doing and see if their natural talent creates anything.

They have to much talent for a gawd awful powerplay. I don’t even care if they get scores on at this point. Just change it up somehow.

It's game 8 and October.

2023-24 they were 5-3-1 in October
2022-23 they were 4-4-2 in October
2021-22 they were 4-4-1 in October
2020 doesn't count (but they were 7-2-1 in the first month in the Canadian division)
2019-20 they were 6-5-3 in October

I say this to note that we do have a few slow starters, we also have a few guys who have to get used to one another a little more - but it's nice to see how quickly Lorentz and OEL have jumped in and made an immediate impact. We also have a team that needs to get used to Berube.

What I am concerned about, as I said a few minutes ago, is that the Power Play is not cohesive at all. You can't shoot from that far back - especially with no one in front - or the occasional time there is someone there, it has to be someone who's going to win a battle for the puck. No screens, no tips, no battle in front.
