"Slowing down" manifests itself in many ways.
If his shot release is slowing down, that would explain the low shooting percentage.
Father Time is undefeated. - Atomic Wedgie
He's never really had a deadly shot though. He's got good lacrosse hands in tight, good grinder/Crosby "lite" style of play; that stuff ages a lot better.
Again, I'm talking 3C down the road where he can line up against less comp and still be effective defensively to some extent, albeit not a "shutdown" center, but those guys are not expensive to find. |

Top speed and average speed are two different things. Just like how some cars go really fast in a straight line but can't keep that speed through corners.
Tavares has always been slow to get up to speed. And that's the problem. The way the game is played now, it's the first three steps that matter. Not how fast you can do a lap around the rink. - Rare_Jewel
he was 4th in speed bursts over 20mph |

Yeah and from an eye test perspective, how often do you see Tavares in too deep and having to get back in a hurry to break up a 2 on 1? How about never, because he doesn't put himself in those situations.
Yeah, he's not going to blow wide around a defender on the rush, but again, he's never done that: that's not his game at all, and not something that centers do unless you're McJesus. |

Any contract negotiations should begin with the hard condition that he'll be switched to the wing. |

And who's our 2C and 3C moving foward? That leaves 2 holes to fill. I think you guys are blowing things away out of proportion with JT, like the guy scored a hatty last night and we're talking about getting rid of him already |

The origin of this conversation is the over the top hyperbole about how great a guy is that had a great game but has - of late - had more not great games than great games.
If Pacioretty - Tavares - Nylander works consistently, it would be f'n amazing and there's not a Leaf fan in this group that wouldn't be delighted by it. Even those of us who were wrong about JT and how unnecessary Pacioretty seemed.
But it was one game. I loved how they played and it would be great if they can keep this up.
It also doesn't change the fact that he need a contract extension and will be 35 next year. So this was the framework for any criticism, not how well he and his line played last night.

Marner will get $13m in Utah and JT will get $7m x 4 with Seattle or San Jose or some other cracked out GM.
The question is, how to utilize all that new cap space.
McDavid?

Indeed he stuck around after handing over the C good one!
Unfortunately for him / Kings fans and the Kings they haven't won a cup since 2014 (he gave up the C in 2016). - Cush29

Hakanpaa and Dewar eligible to be back Saturday and sounds like they're both full out at practice.
If so ...need to clear 2 roster spots and about 1.4M in cap space.
Time for a move or two. |

Huh?
I think I missed your point here, I was curious about 2 things (it's entirely possible I was unclear).
1. How many times after a Captain hands over his C to another player does he stick around with the team for more than to finish out that year? (Brown was a good example).
2. How many times does #1 happen and that team wins a cup with that former captain still on the team.
So Dustin Brown was an example of #1 (I think he stuck around and stayed in LA for what 4 or so more years until he retired no?) But he is definitely not an example of #2.
I wasn't trying to say there was any coloration really just one of those things that I was wondering about since the Leafs just swapped out the "C" is all. |

Either this was some well played humour on your part or you missed the irony.
