Why is the Jet's blog so dead? I keep going in there to see if Jets fans are losing their poop after taking another L courtesy of the Toronto Maple Leafs who have absolutely owned them since the time they celebrated a win in Toronto like it was a Stanley Cup (which I guess makes sense since they wouldn't know what a cup win celebration would be like as they have never won a single cup) and - crickets.
Had they won the other night I feel like it's entirely possible (probable) that many of their greatest fans would have been in the Leafs blog for some super awesome hockey talk.
Funny how that works. |

For those of you who are saying they never wanted to sign Tavares, I suggest you first check what you said on July 1st, 2018:
https://www.hockeybuzz.co...?thread_id=153558&page=14 - Atomic Wedgie
When we landed John Tavares the cap was not going to freeze, we had excellent 3 centre depth that would ideally compare to - albeit lesser than - the Crosby - Malkin - Staal combination that Pittsburgh had boasted. And I think the optimism was through the roof.
Later in that same season we would acquire Jake Muzzin as well. We still had challenges on D with Ozhiganov and Gardiner - and it was really in this season that we started to really realize that Zaitsev was not going to be a good deal afterall.
I was at a friend's cottage in Parry Sound and had limited internet, so I doubt I'd have posted - but I was very happy. It was probably the happiest I'd felt about the Leafs since 2003 when the Leafs acquired Nolan, Wesley and Housley at the trade deadline.
More proof that I am and have always been very, very wrong about the Leafs.

JT game changer
It's incredible how huge of a game changer Tavares could be in the Atlantic division. It's almost double jeopardy by signing him. Your team gets better and you also guarantee your opponent doesn't. It's almost as if his agent has calculated the scenario perfectly to create a bidding war for his client with each suitor giving him something he may want and thus forcing the other parties to offer more cash to bridge the gap.
If he hasn't already re-signed in Long Island and doesn't sign in Toronto, you absolutely have to hope he goes to San Jose. No (frank)ing way do you want to play the Bruins or the Lightning with Tavares while trying to replace the 47 goals you just lost in JVR and Bozak. - Unholy_Goalie

When trying to determine JT's value to the team, you should throw out any feelings, nostalgia, grudges, or other emotions and work strictly with the math.
Forget his name, forget his history, forget his (frank)ing childhood bedsheets.
If he was a UFA on the open market, and you were a GM shopping for a veteran forward, what number would you offer a player with JT's stats? Pull a MonkeyPunk and just look at the numbers and math.
Now, picture that UFA offer number in your mind and I think most of us would agree that the number is probably too high. That is some bias creeping in, so push that poop back and use logic only.
So, you have a number in your head. Now look at the needs and cap space of the other GM's and adjust your math if there is multiple interested parties driving up the price. Now that number that was already too high is now much higher.
Having said all of that, my gut as an armchair GM says his market number is probably $5m. Given a rising cap and the amount of crack many GM's smoke, and you can probably bump that up to $6m. Stamkos got $8m, but he has a cabinet full of shiny hardware to show for it.
If JT wants more than $6m per, I let him walk and no hard feelings. He can come back and work for the team when his playing days are over.
Personally, I wouldn't offer him more than $2-$3m because I think his production could be replaced with younger and cheaper talent.

I can relate to it being the happiest about the Leafs in a long long time. For me the JT signing was only bested (again in recent years / since the early 2000's) by the day they won the draft lottery and got Matthews.

I was in a car in Tremblant, just had played a little shinny, when I heard on the radio that the Leafs had traded for Gilmour. |

McDavid ankle injury - out 2-3 weeks.
In other words, he's holding out, demanding a trade to Toronto. |

Its Frank Serevalli but he said this morning that quite a few teams have told him they have asked about Liljegren, there is a lot of interest and the leafs could move him without any issue.
Why hasn't he been moved yet? Its stupid, dude deserves to play. |

The asking price is probably too high and the perception of the Leafs being up against the cap robs them of any leverage when wheeling and dealing. I bet the offers are lowball.

Seravalli says that is not the case.
And Detroit was in the same situation, crowded D and needed to get rid of someone and they got a (frank)ing 3rd round pick for Maatta. Who is a guy that we all would say is worth nothing before the trade. |

Until Haka is healthy, I feel like there is no rush to trade lili.
For once the Leafs actually have a trade chip that could be valuable at the deadline (right handed Dman).
I'm sure there is maneuvering that could be done to not have to trade him for nothing now (wave holmberg etc)
And just because they are up against the cap doesn't mean they are robbed of anything yet. |
