Why can't the Leafs get player(s) to sign below their value like Crosby just did.

So, now that Crosby has left even more money on the table, surely MM and JT do the same, right? RIGHT?!?!?!...

Because Crosby is a stand up guy that is taking less money to help the team build around him. Mitch is a greedy little wiener that will extract every last penny possible out of the Leafs.

That being said, I don't blame anyone for getting paid while they can, hockey is a sport that lasts 20 years if you're lucky, build that generational wealth while you can.

They’re 10 years younger and aren’t paying 40.07% taxation?

I wouldn't be opposed to that as long as Marner signs for $1.6M.

I don't think Crosby can fathom that he wouldn't be rich and in line for a job the second he retires with any team or advertiser.

No doubt, but it's still kind of wild that in this day and age an elite athlete leaves multiple millions of dollars on the table for 15 straight years.

His original deal was pretty close to OV's which was the highest. It was just kind of a weird quirk that he wanted it to be 8.7. I'm sure if he could have signed 8.7 for 8.7 years he would have done it.

When he's part owner of the Penguins and their GM in 10 years, I'm sure nobody will bat an eye.

Is it him being selfless, or more just him not properly projecting the growth in the NHL salary cap?

IIRC, when he signed his deal 12 years ago, it was for a lot of money.

Isn't it if you go by the percentage of cap that a player consumes, then Crosby's contract is pretty much in line with subsequent contracts of top players?

Also I have to assume that winning 3 Cups and being the best player in the world didn't hurt him making tons of Gatorade/Tim Horton's/etc money.

PS my gf wants to get married and Lawsie and Wedgiesie are scaring me with their reports.

His agent should be shot if he improperly projected the growth in the cap by that much.

And 12 years ago, he was a generational talent that deserved to be making top dollars. Heck, he's still elite.

This is coming from a guy who was a Crosby HATER for the first part of his career, he's won me over.

Just a periodic reminder to everyone that wanted to trade Willy for a 2nd pairing Dman, continue sucking it.

Your girlfriend wants to get married because she is tired of having sex with you.

Actually, I'm wrong.

Best quote from the article:

"However, by signing for less than market value, he left the Penguins in a good position to make a strong pitch for Zach Parise and Ryan Suter when free agency opens on Sunday."

Ouch, Minnesota.

Double ouch.

He wants to win.

He’s made a lot of money and he’s Sidney Crosby. He will be making money off his name alone for years.
