Eklund: Staios "Overplayed His Hand"

Ottawa has done an impressive job at giving up prime assets for players only to lose them shortly after for a dysmal return.

I applaud the optimism over in the Sens thread, but it does appear Staios is bargaining uphill - the players we need don't want to sign here, and the players we have play hardball on extension. On paper all the moves he has made are things that improve the team, but he has gotten what appears to be poor value from his major moves so far. Some of that is Dorion's fault, some of it is Staios' to own. One thing is for sure: Staios has methodically un-Dorioned this team. Surely if the on ice product improves, all will be forgiven.

Move chychrun get back a badly needed RHD at less money and create space to sign Pinto.

Does anybody believe other GMs would not notice that Chychrun was -30 on the season. More than double any other Ottawa Dman. He does not defend. When Jacques Martin came in as interim coach, it became clear that Chychrun was on his way out.

Ottawa’s top Dman was Jake Sanderson at +8, Chabot was -3. Can’t believe that anybody would believe that hockey eyes would not see the problem.

You cannot be an NHL Dman if you cannot play defence.

No one wants to sign in Ottawa, and the players they acquire via trade rarely opt to stay. Which means they basically need to out perform the other teams in the league when it comes to drafting and nurturing talent. Awfully difficult to compete when the deck is stacked against you like that. It’s sad and unfair

Before the Jakob Chychrun move, Staios hasn't done anything that bad. I have to admit, I am very much against the trade. I would've just brought him back, not trading for a 34 year old D-man

Chychrun was -30. Think about it.

Everyone thought Chychrun had a problem because he played on a bad Arizona team. He left and the team improved. The overwhelming evidence suggests that Chychrun is a huge defensive liability.

How does it feel to be eliminated 3 years in a row by the same team? The only thing that improved over that time was the King's exit speed from the 1st round (4-3, 4-2, 4-1).

If anyone watched Chych this year, he was soft as puppy sh*t and recently whined about how tough it was with a coaching/management change this year. I'm glad hes gone.

Plus Jensen turns 34 before the season and has been a bottom pairing player for most of his career on a liability contract. Staios was so dead set on getting a RHD he took a horrible deal. This deal will be the Debrincat trade 2.0.

In fairness, the Capitals had a wildly negative goal differential last and likely aren't a playoff team 99.9% of the time if not for the sloppy mess of teams that all seemed to not want to make the playoffs.

The Bisons have their official announcement on Eric Alarie, whose recruitment was addressed above in this thread. The story quotes Coach Gordon Burnett gushing over this recruit. Their paths previously crossed with the Moose Jaw Warriors in the WHL.

The Elite Prospects listing has had but one update in recent weeks, that being from the Bedrock Dinos announcing their first player commitment for 2024-25. (They remain the only team without a website story for the 2024-25 season on their team site.) The player is Logan Hauer, from from Sherwood Park of the AJHL/BCHL. (They were one of the team to switch leagues mid-season.) In 65 GP his line was 30-38-68.

Also, Holy Trinity has three new names on the LOI Registry: Zakhar Polshakov, Ricards Landmanis, and Mykhail Simchuk. None are listed at Elite Prospects, but I searched them individually. Their former USSR scouting department was busy. Polshakov is from Belarus and also played for Brandon (WHL) and Corpus Christi (NAHL). Landmanis is from Latvia and played for Collingwood (OJHL) and Grand Canyon U (ACHA). He was on the roster of Alaska-Fairbanks in 2022-23 but never played a game. Simchuk is from Ukraine and played for the Brooks Bandits (AJHL) and Grand Canyon U (ACHA).

Point and simple: the Caps are CURRENTLY, IE after all these moves 4.1M over the cap, and that accounts for Backstrom's 9M on LTIR. Caps absolutely HAD to trade Jensen's 4M off the books to be cap compliant after they signed Roy. Heck, they STILL need to trade out salary before the season. Staios traded for the Jensen contract as if it had value when it had negative value - the Caps needed to trade it away. We should have forced them to pay for that, but Staios decided instead to do the most confusing move outside of Yzerman paying San Jose a second rounder to take Walman when they would have simply claimed him on waivers.

It is asinine, myopic and incredibly stupid that Staios did not simply check capfriendly and deduce he could get Jensen for free, or future considerations, or better - forced the Caps to pay us to take the cap hit. In my eyes, the Caps paid the Sens a third round pick to take Nick Jensen, and the Sens then gave the Caps Chychrun for free. While JC is a flawed player, he is a top 4, high draft pedigree, big body, young, cost controlled player. He is certainly worth more than the nothing Washington got him for.

Staios did exactly what he said he was going to do. At the top of his list was acquiring a goaltender. Next on his list was moving out guys he did not want. Chuchrun was at the top of his move list.

You assume that there was somebody else ready to take Chychrun. And, just like everyone first assumed their would be a line-up for PLD. Nobody wanted Chychrun and Washington needed to get as close to a dollar for dollar trade as they could.

The market value for any player is exactly what the market payed. So, we will know soon enough how well this deal goes down in Washington when we see them giving more goals then ever.

Being set on trading a player at all costs is a surefire way to get a terrible return.
