My guess is the Rangers would sign up for that today (as would I) and Laf is willing to bet on himself for potentially more.

$8.5M would be the cap% equivalent of Jack Hughes' deal which was 9.7% of the cap when he was signed. I'm fine with $8.5 or anything below, just get it done ASAP so we have certainty for the Shesty deal.

If Laf starts rolling and the Drury drags his feet a bit, that price tag will be inching up every toe drag goal.

Yeah but back then there was only a number 1 goalie who played 60-70 games and a back up that played 10 to 20.

Now a days you have the 1a and 1b goalie because todays goalies only play 50 maybe 55 games so you need a really good 1b player.

So based on JUST CPI adjusted inflation salary. He is not off base.

Responding to Brukie's comment as well, absolutely other factors come into play when paying someone commensurate to current market conditions. I am just playing with fun stats and numbers.

I'd be more curious looking at the numbers from goalies in 2006 in the first year under the cap. And seeing how the top goalie contracts then compare to today, but using the increase in salary cap rather than CPI as the adjustment.

In 2005-2006 the salary cap was $39M. 2025-2026 (start of Igors new contract) is supposed to be $92.5M.

If Igor signs for $12M, based on the increase in the cap over the years that would be equivalent to a salary of $5.1M in 05/06.

Top 3 goalie salaries in 05/06:
Khabibulin: $6.75M
Brodeur: $5.24M
Kolzig: $4.94M

As other have pointed out there are differences in workloads for goalies and how teams are built in general but pretty interesting.

Well, obviously EVERYTHING we discuss is conjecture. But, he did state that he wants to be the highest paid on the team and didn't mention the league at large. I'd say that's enough to base a useless, arbitrary debate on!

And those 3 goalies were the only goalies in the top 25 in salaries that year. Last year there were no goalies in the top 25 salaries. It appears that Igor is trying to reset the market for goalies to be back in the mix of top salaries.

He could bring a haul in a trade to help extend the window

If Drury realizes he can’t afford him maybe it would be smart to move him at the deadline
