I’m not a leafs fan but the leafs would be wise to trade Marner if they could get a very good return.

Didn't Marner get Selke votes recently? Is it all about blocking shots, or is there more to it?

The Leafs power play has been dismal. And that is Marner's game...not helping...

So it doesn't take alot to see where the rub is...Does Marner/Berube have a chance to work? The basic question is: "Can Marner find all he needs in Craig Berube's system or should the Leaf maximize their asset while they can?

There are no shortage of teams interested and the return could be "future changing."

I hope the Leafs at a minimum get a unprotected high 1st (8 -16 ish) + a top prospect + a good roster player I hope.

I think that would be the return at minimum.

It's hard to get ANY assets for him when he has a NMC and doesn't want to leave Toronto (this season). He's a Leaf for the year. I'd give it 60/40 he'll sign elsewhere after the season.

How often do rental players with a full NMC get a "very good return?"

I think so too.
I don't think he'll sign an 11.5M per on a 8yrs contract with the Leafs

Doesn't matter what GMs want if Marner is refusing to waive

No shortage of teams who would be interested in Marner right now? Can you list 3 or 4?

Not many contenders have room to add $11M right now. Sure, some players will go the other way but Leafs don't want $11M back as this defeats the purpose.

Several rebuilding teams have room for $11M, but will they pay a steep price for someone who could just be a rental? Obviously it has to be a SiGn aND tRAde!

Conclusion. Marner isn't going anywhere during the season. He either gets extended or he walks. Nothing else.

Chicago could and would. They have plenty of space, I'd guess have at least one player the Leafs would want back (not named Bedard), and he would fit what they are trying to do.

That said, I don't think they will.

So then walk me through the trade.

First, Marner waives his dream to win a Cup in Toronto for a chance to join the lottery Hawks.

Second, who goes the other way, recognizing that numerous guys have NMCs/NTCs and Hawks would have to send a decent cap hit the other way. Would Bertuzzi waive to go back? 37 year old Nick Foligno? Remember, the return has to be great enough for the Leafs to do this. Let's say a roster player, top prospect, protected 1st.

Ok, now Chicago takes this huge risk and hopes Marner extends for 8 years. What if he says, no thanks, I like warm weather and low taxes. Dallas gets $9.5M of cap space this summer when Jamie Benn goes away. I'll slide in there.

he refuses to waive. so he refuses waive. he doesn't get moved but what if does waive .......
The Leafs may get a 2nd round pick for his rights and at least 12M in cap space to spend on Knies and other parts for the team.

A second round pick for Marner is about as catastrophic of an outcome as possible. Much better to keep him for the postseason and let him leave in UFA.

Well, you mentioned in your post it would have to be a sign and trade, so that was what I was working off of. Additionally, you asked if a rebuilding team would pony up the assets required to acquire him, so I answered in the affirmative as the Hawks not only have extra picks, but lots of prospects in the system and there will not be room for all of them.

As far as the roster player going the other way, there are basically three options, that would have to agree to it due to restricted movement clauses. Hall, Jones and Murphy. Hall is one of the best overall forwards for the Hawks this year (not saying much but still). Murphy is as steady as they come and would jump at the chance to play for a playoff team (IMO). Jones is Jones. Big minutes, big guy, can do lots of things very well, and again would love to play for a contender. From what I can tell, all of those would save the Leafs some money and be decent return as part of a package.

I agree

The second would be acquired at the draft and when the two side can't come to an agreement on a new contract. Better then getting nothing for him.

Can't they convince Marner to waive his NMC? Give him a Ferreri or something?
