good deal for the flames too. Mangi had 1 great year and is overpaid at 5.8 million
we didn't have to retain and are getting the same 2nd rounder that was paid for Lars Eller (who was on a cheaper deal and the Caps had to retain on that deal)

I really liked Andrew Mangiapane. Can't believe he just cost a 2nd. Retain some and take a low 1st?

Calgary needs to do FULL rebuild. This retool is a joke, I'm sorry.

Connor Zary - great pick. Matt Coronato looks solid.... but this is the first top 10 pick Calgary has in YEARS and the only one they will have in their organization? JH was top pick in 2011 - 3rd overall I think - and that's it.

How can taking back a 2025 2nd be be connected to a retoll and not a rebuild?
Mangiapane scored 14 goals last year and made 5.8 million.... getting a 2nd without retaining is a damn good trade.

Caps could very well have a very bad season next year, so it could turn out to be a high 2rnd round pick. We’ll see.

I just hope that all that cap space will be used to accomodate teams looking to shed bad contracts along with sweeteners and not make a splash in free agency. This team needs a full rebuild.

See what Philly is willing to give along with Johansen, Rangers with Trouba, Islanders with Lee and/or Pageau, etc.

Get picks and prospects.

He's been efficient point producer when given the chance and is solid defensively. Give him more minutes in an offensive role and I fully expect him to do well.

I don't think you've watched very much Flames hockey. He was an efficient point producer when he was a bottom six player. Then they gave him a bunch of money and every opportunity imaginable to succeed in a top six role and he did nothing. Plenty of minutes, plenty of PP time, no results.

In the last three years, he's producing well at 5v5. Plenty of coaching staffs don't efficiently manage their lineup. It's a low risk move for WSH with significant upside.

The counter argument is he had shoulder surgery a year ago, only he knows how much he's actually healed, 1 full year later makes a huge difference. He did well with team Canada twice. Backlund's a well-rounded center, but he's not offensively gifted, Tkachuk was the exception as Back's linemate.
Calgary's current head coach was running it back with Sutter's old system, one that Huberdeau can't succeed with either..I like this trade from WAS perspective, it's like a repeat of the Bennett trade. Sure CGY picks up a 2nd, but it might shine more light on our crappy system.. maybe it changes, maybe other GMs wonder if Huberdeau needs a better coaching system..

Flames fans.. we're not drafting players with 100% of these picks - it's very possible they'll get traded - just wait until after the draft and July 1st to confirm a re-tool or rebuild.. a few more days..

I dont think you would find too many Flames fans who dont like Mange the player and person. That said he's not producing comensurate to his 5.8 mil salary so getting a 2nd without retaining salary is a win for Calgary.
Washington is getting a good player and a great person in a contract year and we all hope he kills it in Washington!

Wondering if this is making cap space for a big name. Maybe Stamkos, Guentzel, Reinhart? They miss Tanev.

Mangiapane was playing with Backlund after getting numerous chances to play higher in the lineup with multiple coaches and not doing much with it. He's better than a lot of bottom six players but doesn't succeed playing on lines that other teams are trying to shut down.

Huska's system was also completely different from Sutter's. Almost nothing was similar between the two.

Too much term left.
We could take Korpisalo off your hands though, we’ll need a 1B option to mentor Wolf anyways.

Why did you post this trade and not the Ullmark trade? And is there anything that you do that actually MAKES sense?

good deal for the Caps but the math is bad. their current projected cap is $90M. they have 10 forwards, 7 D and 1 goalie. Backstrom is 9.2M in LTIR so is that the cushion? He wont play at all this year?
