I have to disagree with you Yorkie.
The return of a 4th rounder in helping a division rival out of cap hell so they can resign offer sheeted players, or just gain cap space for future deals, is not worth it at all. IMO, the possible upsides of picking a player in the 4th round and the chances of him making any impact are not worth,
1) The help you just gave the Oilers.
2) The possible, all be it small chance, that Podz gets it together and develops into something that smears egg on your face as a GM. If he didn't clear waivers and got picked up by 30 other teams, way less pressure on Alvin then Podz becoming a player riding McDrai's coattail.
3) Probably would have been picked up by SJ on waivers, so no biggy as he fades into obscurity.
4) If you need a pick, take anything else from a non rival. a 5th from OTT is better than a 4th from EDM, optics wise and close in actual positions as well.
5) Or, might have just cleared waivers and made it to Abby.
A 4th rounder from the Oilers is not worth lighting a fuse on a possible optics poopbomb to go off in the future.

They didn't help the Oilers. They gave them money, so they made their cap situation worse. |

Thanks NYN.
I was okay with the Podkolzin pick, as he showed some potential to be a decent forechecker and a decent defensive player, something the team sorely needed. Looks like I may have been wrong, which happens on occasion.
Leading up to that draft, I had said drafting a defenseman like Harley would be a solid pick, it didn't seem to go over well in here.

In one way yes, in another no.
It gave them options.
Replace Holloway with Podz. they save 1.3 Mil, and resign Broberg.
After the Ceci deal, the Oilers have room to wiggle now.
It was a poor move all around. Not worth a 4th |

Thanks Yorkie. Good to see the trash being put out to the curb. Benning was an unmitigated disaster. |

Podkolzin doesn't have it between the ears. He was drafted 5 years ago. Let it go he's a bust. Agree 100 percent York |

Podkolzin might actually end up in the Oilers top 12 full time, especially as it seems they are making desperate moves to cover for potentially losing 2 guys to OS. Sad that he's leaving the way he is, but there simply wasn't room for him anymore, he wasn't playing over any of the guys in the Canucks top 12. |

The kid had some skill, but he didn't earn a shot at any top six minutes. Waste of another top 10 pick by the clueless Benning regime. |

Exactly, Podkolzin simply got added to the Canucks first round bust trash pile. |

47 NHL contracts as Mynio's slides off the list when he is returned to juniors. |

The Oilers can use Podz to replace Foegle’s lack of finish and scoring at half the price. |

I give better than 10:1 odds Podz doesn't even make the Oilers roster out of training camp and ends up on another team via the waiver wire. |

It will be sad if he doesn't make it onto the Oilers regular roster. |

Why? - Marwood
Because he's always had the physical tools, a good attitude, and team mentality. He could just never put it together to be the type of player the team needed him to be. |

But still fell way short of showing he had the talent.
The only sad part is that the Canucks drafted him. |

Ultimately, yes. It would have been much more fun to hear everyone female dog and moan about Caufield being too small to play in the NHL |

Thank you NYN...the trade seems a tad underwhelming but i think this management team knows what they are doing. Maybe it's just part of a bigger piece?? |
