I say ASP should don a Wings jersey beginning next season. Who agrees? |

I thought it was dumb for ASP to start the season in Sweden again. He needs to play in North Amerca and get accustomed to the game over here. I read that Wings management wanted Nygaard to start in GR this year as well... but he didn't want to do it which is kind of a red flag for me. What's his reasoning ? These guys need to step out of their comfort zones and play in the AHL... we don't needa anymore "over ripe" prospects. This team needs to get better and younger right now. |

It took some weird turns. After the draft, he was already going to be playing in the SHL. ASP wanted another year over there but both signed (thankfully). The rookie week caused some of the office to think MBN may have a shot at the main roster. Once it came down to GR or Sweden (he was already signed, but they did a special allowance for him to miss the start of the season) he and his “team” decided SHL. I know at least one of the regular press who wanted ASP here, I wanted him here too. He needs some weight. You’ve seen the AHL guys run the Euros for fun. Still wish they were both here but they’re getting time in together and ASP can work on his D zone play. Not ideal, but that’s how I heard it broken down. |

Not wise to push an 18 yr old into a new culture before he is ready.

I’m fine with where he’s at. He wasn’t originally going to be over for main camp (like ASP). There was something they liked and wanted to take another look. Luckily he doesn’t need to put on a bunch of lbs. i really like ASP’s shot, pass and skating. If he comes over they need to get serious about a left side solid partner for him |

Tomas Tatar was 18 when he went to GR... he was drafted at 60th in his draft class and not projected to have as high a ceiling as Nygaard (1st round, 15th overall). While he's still young... he's not too young IMO. I want to see what he can do in the AHL. I don't think it's too early given his skillset. The players in this league are getting younger. It's not 1995 anymore. Time to let the kids play. |

I’ve seen posts/articles calling for Kane to be traded, calling for other trades or the coach getting fired and dumping the mid veterans to call up prospects. I can’t imagine the anger and panic if they didn’t have the brutal schedule they had to start the year while being tied with OTT, TB and Toronto for 2nd place in their division. |

I’m hearing more on coaching. I think if the differentials were the same you’d see the same issues. We just broke the record for lowest shots on goal in a win in history with 10. Last year it was clear they wanted to add goals. This year is supposed to be enhanced D focus but SOG and the PK look awful. I think Kane flipped a switch and looks to be on track. I think what adds to the frustration was a summer of fan disappointment in changes. Still early, but being 3rd or 4th worst in the league for shots against and pretty low on shots for feels like affirmation for fans who already weren’t happy with the shifts. |

When his team's season ends (usually before GR's or the Wings) we will see him stateside for the finale in GR or maybe even Detroit. |

Don't get it ? lol.. Wings management wanted him in the AHL... but still let him make the choice. I've been watching Detroit prospects come and play in GR since their AHL affiliation started in 2001. I've seen how this plays out. He may or may not come over and play a handful of games if the Griffins make the playoffs (like Danielson did last season). Me and other Wings fans want to see how he responds and/or adapts to AHL competition. It would be different if he didn't have the skillset. I think he has the tools to grow and develop better in the AHL than his Swedish league. |

For what it’s worth, Wings management were giving him a chance to see if he could break past the AHL to the NHL. He had his deal in place in the SHL and made it clear early on that if he couldn’t work in the NHL he was going to play in the SHL. He wasn’t originally slated to come back for camp (would have stayed back with ASP). There were multiple interviews where they wanted a longer look at him so he came back for the camp. The SHL team left his spot open and he chose to do that this year. His earliest interviews all had him spending the year in the SHL. |

It would depends on how he looks in pre-season. I'm thinking he's going to need a year in the AHL at least to get use to the smaller ice and faster more physical game over here. When you look at Seider, Edvinsson, Johansson, Wallinder ect... none of them went straight into the NHL. Seider probably would have been ok but none of the others looked ready and some struggled to adjust with their first year in the AHL. |

Over the past several years, there's been a serious shift in the progress of drafted kids; where they go v. where theywant to go. McGroarty is an example. I'm not sure what "right" looks like here.
On one hand, I'm of the opinion that question MUST be asked, there's got to be a levelling of expectations here. There's got to be "the closing"; "So, given all we've spoken of, can you see yourself wearing The Winged Wheel?" Players and leadership have to be honest. But the player has the upper hand....at least the 1st rounders do.
The Abbreviation Twins are really doing whatthey feel is best for them. ASP wasn't going to make the Big Club out of camp,so I'm not upset/surprised/worried. MBN is kind of a weird one. I want him on NA ice because he CAN be on the Big Club next year. At the end of the day, ASP is doing what Mo did, MBN seems to have wanted a taste but was pre-determined to go back to the SHL.
I'm not flipping out over this whole thing, but it is a concerning trend across the league, and GMs will need to figure this out as kids exercise their evolving autonomy.
Watching the NJD game....the defensive lapses in coverage are stark, for sure. We really need to shut down the passing lanes, guys look too reactionary. The impressive thing so far is how the offense seems to be clicking much more. I know it's early in the season, but there are still bad habits from last year hanging around, and that's not going to help us progress. Being 4-3 considering the teams we've played thus far is impressive. Stay outtathe sin-bin, shut down passing lanes...
Johansson needs more ice time. Say it with me...."More. Ice. Time!" |
